Simonsdale Community

Simonsdale Community Use what is already in the community and mobilize individuals, associations, and institutions to come together to build on their assets-not just needs!

Simonsdale was established during World War II and is comprised of mainly small frame bungalow, cottage and Cape Cod style housing. Many of the original Simonsdale residents migrated from more rural locations in the state and went to work in the naval shipyard. It is located near the Portsmouth City Park area and is bordered by Portsmouth Boulevard and Elmhurst Lane. There are several neighborhood

schools and athletic fields close by to serve the 1,200+ parcels from the various subdivisions that make up the Simonsdale area. It was one of about 45 public and private communities that were built in Portsmouth and parts of former Norfolk County to house shipyard workers during World War II. Simonsdale developed into a close-knit community over the decades, with its own elementary school, worship centers, store fronts and civic league.
