PALS members attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Rarden Daily Bread’s new commercial kitchen!

After a long journey of finding places to prepare more than 85 meals daily, this dedicated team has worked together with the support of Scioto County Commisioners, IBEW Local #575, Scioto Foundation, AEP Ohio and many other funding sources to create a permanent space to continue serving the community seven days a week.

Since opening in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, these ladies have prepared and served more than 230,000 meals. They know hunger doesn’t take a day off, and neither do they. Their commitment to showing up for others is a powerful example of community service in action.

Last spring, PALS awarded Rarden Daily Bread $2,500 to purchase essential ingredients not available through the Freestore Food Bank, helping low-income community members access free, hot, nourishing meals.

Want to be part of the spirit of service? Rarden Daily Bread is looking for volunteers to help cook and serve from 3 to 5:30 p.m. No long-term commitment is required. Volunteers can sign up when their schedules allow and make a difference in the community. Join the Rarden Daily Bread Inc. Facebook Group and let them know you would like to volunteer time.

PALS is happy to support the Riverfront project!

This week, Main Street Portsmouth In Bloom Board Member, Suzette Rhea, and Executive Director, Emily Uldrich, presented our City of Portsmouth Community Development Director, Tracy Shearer, with a $22,500 check for the Riverfront Picnic Project.

Thanks to support from the The Scioto Foundation, the Peoples Bank Foundation, and the Portsmouth Area Ladies, we are able to add new durable picnic tables to the Portsmouth Riverfront to supplement the Portsmouth Riverfront Project! Additional picnic tables, memorial benches, and trash cans funded by private donors will be added to the Riverfront in the spring as part of the Riverfront Picnic Project.

We would like to recognize all the hard work Tracy Shearer put into the Riverfront Redevelopment Project! Tracy spent a lot of time and effort putting together a huge, detailed proposal that resulted in the 34 million dollar grant funding awarded by Governor DeWine and the State of Ohio specifically for the Riverfront.

Unfortunately, construction never goes as planned. The Riverfront Development is an ambitious project. A number of amenities in the proposal could not be funded within the budget. Durable picnic tables and site furniture matching our Downtown streetscape were among the components which were eliminated.

At Main Street Portsmouth In Bloom, we are thrilled to be able to contribute to the redevelopment of a beautiful Riverfront which will soon be accessible to everyone! We are grateful for our Community Partners for their help with this project.

We look forward to a scenic picnic on the Portsmouth Riverfront!

Pals recently donated $5,000 to Friends of Portsmouth for the "Boost Our Kids" program. Funds will subsidize skating rink access for kids at the Burnside Brankamp Park in Boneyfiddle during Winterfest.
