Local residents can now have genetic testing done to determine their future chances of developing a heart condition, thanks to the SOMC Cancer Center. While genetic testing for cancer was already previously available, testing is now available for heart disease as well.

Ashley Risner, a Nurse Practitioner at the Center, visited our Kiwanis luncheon on August 26 with all the details. She is pictured with Club President Kara Tieman.

Are you interested? If so, ask your family or heart doctor for a referral (for insurance purposes), and you will receive a packet of information in the mail. This will include questions you need to answer about your family history, which Ashley said can be one of the most important health tools you have. You will also provide some blood samples as part of your evaluation.

We received a grant from WSAZ Children's Charities to offer free self-care and hygiene products for those under the age of 18. Products are available at all of our library locations. If you are in need, just ask a library employee at one of our public desks.

Dolly Parton made it possible for children throughout Ohio and around the world to receive free books and encourage them to have a love for reading. Every year, local children sign up for this program at our annual Kids Day. Thank you, Dolly, for your passion to promote literacy around the world and to give back so generously to others.

Portsmouth is a Top 25 finalist for Hallmark’s Merriest Christmas Towns contest! Please vote daily so Portsmouth can win at https://merriestchristmastownscontest.hallmarkchannel.com/vote/23. Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. ET on September 4, 2026. One town will be named Hallmark's Merriest Christmas Town and receive the opportunity to serve as a filming location for a Hallmark movie.

Kiwanis is in full River Days mode this month and anticipating the upcoming Miss River Days pageant! On August 12, our reigning royalty and five of this year’s contestants stopped by to tell us more about their community service and plans for the future. We also found out what countries they will represent with their parade floats.
