theatre KAPOW (tKAPOW) finishes its 18th season with Morning Sun by Simon Stephens at NH Theatre Project in Portsmouth, NH June 12 - 14, 2026.

In Greenwich Village a generation or so ago, the city is alive. Joni Mitchell sings, friends and lovers come and go, and the regulars change at the neighborhood tavern. As 50 years pass, one woman’s life is revealed in all its complexity, mystery and possibility in this play about mothers and daughters, beginnings and endings. As it picks apart evolving ideas of identity, family, memory, and more, Morning Sun reminds us that the interruptions in our lives are the ghosts we carry with us. Beautifully crafted and deeply moving, this NH premiere is a poignant exploration of the human experience.

Rachael Chapin Longo, the actress playing Charlie McBride in this production, has been making theatre with tKAPOW since 2013. “I read Morning Sun for the first time over a year ago,” Longo shared “and I remember being struck by Stephens’ use of such a focused and narrow lens to draw the audience into his storytelling.”

Seacoast area theatre artist Leslie Pasternack, a longtime friend and ‘playmate’ of the company, is directing for the first time with tKAPOW. “This play tells a rich and layered story of one woman’s life with her family,” Pasternack said, “but it’s also about searching to make connections between the diverse elements of our lives. We are full of contradicting impulses, and we’re trying to resolve or at least understand them, but time pulls us forward regardless. And we look back over our shoulder and wonder what we missed.”

The company has been in rehearsal since late April. Longo said, “As we've been working on the play, I have been thinking so much about the things left unsaid that haunt us. The strength of a mother. The strength of a daughter. The push and pull of what we want to be and how others perceive us.” Pasternack added with a smile, “The script is also frequently hilarious, as the actors suddenly reveal a juicy tidbit to the audience or morph into an unexpected new character.”

Completing the cast are NH actresses Pamela Battin-Sacks and Annie Lelio, both performing with tKAPOW for the first time. Morning Sun is stage-managed by company member Carey Cahoon, Artistic Director Matt Cahoon is the scenic and lighting designer, costume design is by Barbara Holbrook, and sound design by Kyrie Ellison-Keller.

Performances of Morning Sun at New Hampshire Theatre Project are June 12 at 7:30pm, June 13 at 4:00pm and June 14 at 2:00pm. tKAPOW’s series sponsor is Saint Mary’s Bank. For tickets or more information, visit www.tkapow.com.

DONATION LINK GOES LIVE JUNE 9

NH Gives is New Hampshire's statewide celebration of giving. In just 24 hours each year, thousands of donors come together to support local nonprofits, raising millions of dollars that strengthen communities across the state. Every donation matters, and together, donors have helped nonprofits grow programs and make a lasting impact.

This year, NH Gives takes place June 9-10, and NHTP has a goal of $15000 to help support our organization's mission of Applied Theatre in this community and throughout New Hampshire, including our outreach programs, such as the Elephant-in-the-Room Series®? and Theatre For Life.

And to kick things off, we will be holding a special NH Gives Campaign Launch Party at OTTO Portsmouth from 5pm-10pm on June 9! OTTO has generously agreed to donate 10% of all food and beverage sales for the entire day to NHTP, so you can come help support our organization by stopping by and having a meal - or even ordering a pizza to go! We will have a table there at OTTO throughout the evening, and we welcome you to join us for dinner or come by to say a quick hello.

And then, on June 10, New Hampshire Theatre Project will have an open house all day from 10am-5pm for the remaining hours of our NH Gives campaign- so feel free to stop by and visit our theatre, join us for a drink and a snack, and be a part of our livestream, as we ask our community for support.

June 9 5pm-10pm - NH Gives Campaign Launch Event at OTTO 110 Brewery Ln in Portsmouth

June 10 10am-5pm - Open House at NHTP 959 Islington St. #3 in Portsmouth

Much beloved by his family, friends, and the theatre community, Griffinn passed away due to aggressive cutaneous T-cell lymphoma on April 4.

Griffinn was a vivacious, charismatic performer and a veteran of many productions around the Seacoast.

Together with our fellow theatre makers in the area, WE ARE DEDICATING TODAY'S PERFORMANCE IN HIS MEMORY.
