Thank you, Denise, for hosting Portsmouth AAUW book group today and for reviewing WHO IS GOVERNMENT? THE UNTOLD STORY OF PUBLIC SERVICE by Michael Lewis. As always we enjoyed a thoughtful, lively discussion. This book beautifully illustrates the dedication, professionalism, and commitment typical of federal employees throughout our nation. Readers may be surprised by the range of services and research being done.

Today is Equal Pay Day emphasizing that due to the gender pay gap, women have to work 85 days into 2026 to earn what a man did in 2025! Women working full-time, year-round earn 81 cents for every $1 paid to men. While much progress has been made over the years, we still must actively push for pay equity.

BECOMING MADAM SECRETARY by Stephanie Dray is a fictional account of the life and career of Francis Perkins. She was the first female cabinet member serving as Secretary of Labor appointed by FDR. Thank you to Barbara for hosting and leading our discussion of this novel and of Secretary Perkins advocacy for workers rights as well as programs we now depend on such as social security. She made a difference!

Jonathan Haidt’s THE ANXIOUS GENERATION was the focus of our book group discussion today. The recently released companion book THE AMAZING GENERATION by Jonathan Haidt and Catherine Price is intended for youth . Our concerns for the impact of social media coupled with reduced playtime and in-person social contacts led to an interesting and thoughtful conversation. While THE AMAZING GENERATION is intended for youth, we think most adults will find it an easy read that both clearly states the issues and provides excellent guidance and possible solutions. We all need to know more about how to use technology as a tool in positive ways.
