What does it mean to trust God with the good we have received – AND with what lies ahead, known and unknown?

As you receive your stewardship mailing, take time to prayerfully consider your pledge for the coming year.

Together, we will tend what we've been given and share in God's continuing ministry through our congregation.

ANNUAL MARZETTI SALE at First Pres!

From their Presbyterian Women ...

It is time for the Presbyterian Women of First Presbyterian Church to offer you an opportunity for mission support through the ANNUAL MARZETTI SALE on November 11.

The money raised will help us fulfill our annual pledge of $1200 to the Food Pantry.

Servings will be in containers of the following sizes:
10 ounces - $7.00
32 ounces - $17.00
64 ounces - $32.00

Order slips are available in the Fellowship Hall and the Church Office or orders may be placed by calling Betty Kennedy or the Church Office: (740) 353-4259.

Please place orders by Monday, November 2.
Orders can be picked up on Wednesday, November 11.
Delivery is available upon request.

Welcome to worship at Second Presbyterian Church in Portsmouth, OH! (9:30 am)

“What you pay attention to grows.” When uncertainty about tomorrow threatens to consume us, how do we remember the goodness and provision of today? Jesus tells us not to worry, but what if this passage is about more than worry? What if it’s about learning to trust God even when we can’t make uncertainty go away? Through Matthew 6 and Genesis 2, we’ll explore what it means to trust God while faithfully tending what we’ve received. We can’t know everything tomorrow will bring, but we can pay attention to God’s goodness today.

God’s Pantry is OPEN today (Weds, Oct 21, 2026).

In September, God's Pantry served 249 people in 130 Scioto County households, including 65 seniors, 147 adults, and 37 children + 6 emergency food bags through the church office when the Pantry was closed.

EMERGENCY FOOD is available any time the Pantry is closed by contacting the church office: 740-353-4159 or [email protected]. (This counts as a monthly visit to the Pantry.)

You'll need to fill out a form with your name, address, phone number, and the number of people in your household.

We also have a list of other pantries in the county that we can pass out or email.

Now available: (new) socks and (gently used) shoes from our friends at Central Church Portsmouth in the Pantry.

God's Pantry is ordinarily open on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Wednesdays of the month from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (It can be visited once per month.)

Please bring a valid form of ID (driver's license or state ID), proof of residency in Scioto County (mail), and social security numbers for everyone in your household. You'll need to fill out a form, and your information will be added to the computer.
Look for the sign near the entrance steps from our Waller St. parking lot (across
from PHS) and enter the lower level.

The Pantry is also accessible from the ramp entrance (facing the PHS track) with a chairlift from the first floor to the lower level. Contact the church office to use this alternate entrance (740-353-4159). Currently, only manual wheelchairs can be used on the chairlift.

We are a choice-based pantry, which means you are able to shop for the items you want using your points (like at Kroger). We follow the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services income guidelines, and "points" to spend on food, household, and cleaning items are determined by household size.

Our PipeScreams Organ Spooktacular returns Fri, Oct 30 at 7:00 pm for an evening of spooky, spectacular music featuring five organists ...

The return of “Hollywood Organist” Aaron Shows and performances by Dr. Jerry Martin, Patrick Torsell, and Justin Wiget in a Portsmouth premiere of a unique organ-and-human duet.

Dr. Stanley Workman, Jr. and the 2nd Pres Choral Scholars will bring Broadway to the organ, and the Portsmouth Youth Ballet, directed by Summer Logan, will once again join the spooktacular festivities.

This concert is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome.

Stronger parents. Happier kids. Better connections.

The Garden Advocacy Center (Chillicothe, OH) is a non-profit organization offering Active Parenting classes at Second Pres on Wednesdays from 5:30 - 7:30 pm in the Parlor.

The Active Parenting Program is designed to give families the tools, support, and confidence to raise responsible, respectful, and resilient children. It teaches how to build strong relationships, set clear limits, manage challenging behaviors, and make family life overall more enjoyable.

Session 1: The Active Parent
Introduces the Active Parenting approach, emphasizing child development, mutual respect, participation, and the qualities children need to succeed.

Session 2: Cooperation and Communication
Explores how effective communication and problem-solving strategies build cooperation between parents and children.

Session 3: Responsibility and Discipline
Teaches positive discipline by setting clear boundaries, encouraging responsibility, and using logical consequences instead of punishment.

Session 4: Building Courage and Self-Esteem
Focuses on fostering children's confidence through encouragement, positive thinking, and relationship-building techniques.

Session 5: Understanding and Redirecting Misbehavior
Helps parents identify the reasons behind misbehavior and respond with effective redirection strategies.

Session 6: Active Parenting for School Success
Equips parents to support lifelong learning and their children's success in school and beyond through intentional involvement.

These classes are open to anyone in the County.
(They are also offered in Pike and Ross Counties.)

And if you see a class theme that you or someone you know might be interested in, you are welcome to drop by just for that class. Anyone who attends all 6 classes earns a certificate.
