Portsmouth Connex is a series of proposed activity routes throughout Portsmouth, and its surrounding communities. The routes connect key destinations focusing on designated lanes (bicycle/running/walking) through the Portsmouth Front Street Mural District and shared lanes leading to area parks, key entertainment, historical sites, hospitals, shopping, and beyond. Connex efforts were spearheaded i
n April, 2013 by Shawnee Recreation Trail, Inc. (SRT) in collaboration with the Scioto County Health Coalition and Portsmouth City Council. In addition to Portsmouth Connex, there are also several other planned sections – including West Side Connex and New Boston Connex. The future is wide-open for extended Connex routes all around our community. History: SRT, a non-profit organization since 2006, was created to develop bicycle trails in Scioto County and Portsmouth area. Former president Linda Liner spearheaded a successful community-wide fundraising campaign, raising nearly $45,000 toward the project. Liner moved away from the area, but SRT Board members Jeff Smith, Esther Downey, and Barb Bradbury continued the effort. Connex’ goals are multi-faceted and centered on improving the economic viability of Portsmouth. Promote activity and access along the riverfront and Front Street mural district;
b. Encourage support for community growth “along the route” by providing cyclists, runners, walkers safe and marked routes to businesses, schools and the University, parks, hospitals, and other key destinations;
c. Provide evidence of Portsmouth’s transformation into a bicycle-friendly, health conscious and forward-thinking community. In an effort to engage our community in these objectives, please suggest that your friends like the Connex page and share the maps and plans freely. We plan to keep you updated on progress, fundraisers, or other opportunities to get involved.
