The Portsmouth Area Chamber of Commerce proudly celebrates 100 years of promoting and facilitating progress in Southern Ohio. “Dedicated to Making a Difference” is not just the chamber slogan; it’s our goal. The chamber’s primary focus is to empower its members to achieve success by providing a variety of services and benefits to them. Its broader focus as an organization is to encourage communit

y pride and involvement. The Chamber achieves this by collaborating with many other organizations and with various governmental agencies. The Portsmouth Area Chamber of Commerce is a volunteer, non-profit organization that is funded by nearly 500 members. Chamber members receive a host of benefits including the opportunity to participate in group-rated workers comp and group-rated health insurance plans. The chamber also provides many educational opportunities to its members through breakfasts, luncheons and seminars. The Southern Ohio Safety Council program is a great benefit for many employers in southern Ohio. The chamber partners with the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation to bring quality safety education to employers throughout the region. The chamber realizes that the future of Scioto County depends on a well-informed and involved leadership. That’s why the chamber is proud to facilitate the Leadership Portsmouth program. The program is designed to build and enhance the community by honing in on the leadership talents of present and future leaders. The chamber carries out its mission by collaborating with many other organizations. One partnership that the chamber is particularly proud of is the work we do with the Small Business Development Centers. The chamber is a satellite office for the SBDC which offers free business counseling. Their services are available to chamber members as well as the general public at no charge. The Portsmouth Area Chamber of Commerce supports progress through its programs, services and events, always keeping the betterment of the community as its driving force.

There is tremendous opportunity ahead—and we’re committed to building it together.

We are stronger together.

Today at Centrus we heard from Governor Mike DeWine and Lt Governor Jim Tressel during the Heart of Opportunity Tour where they discussed CNBC ranking Ohio #1 as the Top State for Business.

This picture represents the hard work and partnerships forged over the past several years to move Scioto County forward. Joining the Governor we have the County, Southern Ohio Port Authority, Shawnee State University, Community Action and Portsmouth Area Chamber of Commerce represented. Each entity, along with the City of Portsmouth(present but not pictured), SOMC and DESCO, helps to make up the board for the Scioto County Development Corporation.

Here we stand united and working hard to move our community forward together.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Melanie Porter
Independent Benefits Advisor | Aflac

About Her Business
Melanie helps businesses build stronger employee benefit packages through Aflac, including voluntary supplemental insurance and group Dental and Vision coverage. She works directly with employers and their employees to explain options, assist with enrollment, and provide ongoing local service—and she's happy to help individuals and families explore coverage outside of an employer too.

Why Businesses Love Working With Melanie
"Offering valuable employee benefits doesn't necessarily mean adding significant costs for the employer. Whether a business already has benefits in place or is starting from scratch, I'm happy to review what you currently offer and explore options that may strengthen your benefits package, support employee retention, and provide additional financial protection for your employees. It doesn't matter if you have an employee size of 2 or 202!"

Did You Know?
Before becoming an Aflac benefits advisor, Melanie spent more than 15 years working in the legal field as a Paralegal at a general practice law firm and worked with the State of Ohio. She also helps oversee the administrative operations of her family-owned steel fabrication business, so she understands employee benefits from both sides of the table—as an advisor AND as an employer.

Member Spotlight: Habitat for Humanity of the Tri-State.

Habitat for Humanity of the Tri-State has brought people together since 1990 to build homes, communities and hope. Their work in the Portsmouth area includes helping local income-qualified homebuyers to achieve their dream of affordable homeownership.
The Habitat ReStore in New Boston provides another way for the community to support our mission through shopping, donating and volunteering.

Special Message for Followers -When you shop or donate at the New Boston ReStore, you are doing much more than giving household items and building materials a second life. ReStore proceeds help support Habitat’s mission of building affordable homes in our community.

Amanda Purdy’s Habitat home is a wonderful example of what that mission looks like in action. Behind every Habitat home is a partnership among a local home buyer & their family, volunteers, donors, businesses and community supporters working together to create the stability and opportunity that comes with a safe, decent home.

We invite Chamber members and community residents to visit the New Boston ReStore, donate gently used furniture, appliances, home goods and building materials, volunteer with Habitat or learn more about supporting future home builds in Scioto County.

Fun Fact - Habitat for Humanity of the Tri-State’s New Boston ReStore has been serving Scioto County and surrounding communities since 2022.

Scioto Shines - Member Spotlight Series Launches Monday!

Starting Monday, we're excited to roll out our new weekly Member Spotlight "Scioto Shines" series – a chance to celebrate the businesses and people that have shaped and continue to build Scioto County's future.

Each week, we'll feature one of our Chamber members across our social media. It's a great way to get your business in front of the community.

Here's what we need from you:

Your business logo
A photo (of your team, location, or products – whatever represents your business best)
A brief write-up about your business (just a few sentences on what you do and what makes you special)
Ready to be featured? Send everything to [email protected]

We're looking forward to highlighting the incredible businesses that make our region great!

We’re so proud of Candyland Children’s Museum for being one of just five organizations statewide selected for an Ohio Financial Literacy Education Grant!

We’re incredibly honored to share that Candyland Children’s Museum has received an Ohio Financial Literacy Education Grant! 🎉

As one of just five ✋ organizations selected across the state, we’ll use this funding to bring our new ✨Money Smart Kids Initiative✨ to life through structured programming, youth entrepreneurship activities, and a permanent interactive exhibit.

We believe some of the biggest life lessons can begin with play, and we can’t wait to create fun, approachable ways for kiddos to build financial skills that will help them grow into "money smart kids (and eventually adults!)."

Keep an eye out 👀 for amazing new financial literacy exhibits and programming coming soon to CCM!

Thank you to the Ohio Division of Financial Institutions and the Ohio Department of Commerce for supporting this initiative! 🙌
