🚀 Beyond "Slop": Why Portsmouth Students Must Master AI

I recently used AI to help synthesize a complex city issue, which drew a familiar criticism: that AI is just "generated slop."
That reaction is exactly why we need to talk about the future of Portsmouth education.

If a student uses AI to skip the work, it’s a shortcut. But when used correctly—through frameworks like the CRIT (Context, Role, Interview, Task) method—AI becomes a strategic critical thinking partner. It allows us to stress-test logic, identify our own biases, find signals in massive datasets, and refine complex ideas.

This is called Metacognitive Regulation—the ability to steer your own thinking while using advanced tools. It is the most critical skill for workforces 2026 and beyond.

The Stakes Are Real
If we teach our students to avoid AI while the rest of the world teaches them to master it, Portsmouth will face a self-inflicted talent recession. We will end up importing the innovators we should have been producing ourselves.

I want our graduates to be the ones who can tell the difference between "slop" and "strategy." We owe it to them to lead by example.
