Brothers and Sisters of the VPFF. Our convention has come to a close, and we have charted the course for the next two years of our organization. I would like to thank President Emeritus Bragg for his 40 years of service and leadership to our union.

Thank you to all the members, locals, friends and family for your support over this campaign. Your vote of confidence in me to lead this great organization for the next four years is an honor and a great responsibility.

While we were in our convention, with over 100 delegates representing our 11,000 members we received the news of what is nothing short of betrayal from the governor with her veto of a collective bargaining bill. As I said on the convention floor. This obstacle isn’t going to stop us, it will build us. Our generations fight in this union is clear. Our convention delegates made it clear. Collective bargaining is our fight, it’s not an easy fight. But it’s the right fight.

Our members, firefighters and paramedics will continue to show up every single day for our communities. And we deserve nothing less than the full support of those that say they stand with us. We will always stand with those who stand with us, and we will fight like hell against those who oppose us.

Yesterday I had the chance to join Fairfax County Professional Firefighters, Paramedics & 911 Dispatchers, for their annual Tom Simcoe legislative luncheon.

It was a great gathering of Delegates, Senators, county leaders, and fire service representatives coming together ahead of the 2026 General Assembly session to talk about public safety issues that impact every corner of Virginia.

These conversations matter. Collective bargaining, recruitment and retention, cancer coverage, and the day-to-day realities facing our firefighters don’t stop at jurisdictional lines. They require coordination, honesty, and a clear path forward.

Thank you to Local 2068 President Robert Young for hosting an excellent event again this year, and for bringing so many voices to the table. The work ahead is big, but days like this make it clear that we’re moving in the right direction.

The Virginia Association of Counties (VACO) released their 2026 legislative agenda this week. Buried in the document are several positions that directly impact firefighters, medics, and public safety across the Commonwealth.

VACO has taken the following positions:
• Opposing any statewide mandate for collective bargaining
• Opposing any expansion of workers’ compensation presumptive protections
• Opposing public safety standards that increase operational costs

These are not abstract policy debates. They shape the real world conditions our members face:
• Whether a firefighter with occupational cancer can get care
• Whether a medic exposed to trauma has coverage
• Whether local governments can fix staffing shortages and retention
• Whether public safety is seen as a cost or a priority

Our view in the VPFF is clear. Firefighters are not a line item on a spreadsheet.

Collective bargaining helps stabilize departments, reduce turnover, and strengthen emergency services.

Presumptive protections reflect the risks firefighters take every day. And statewide standards aren’t burdens, they’re how we keep the public and our members safe.

As we enter the 2026 General Assembly session, the VPFF will continue advocating for a modern, professional fire service across Virginia. We’re ready to work with the new Administration, legislators from both parties, and our labor partners to move the Commonwealth forward.

Virginia is changing. Public safety is changing. And the VPFF intends to be at the center of that progress.
