Raphael House of Portland is a multi-faceted domestic violence prevention and intervention agency dedicated to fighting the causes and effects of intimate partner violence in a variety of ways. Founded in 1977, we offer emergency shelter in a confidential location, safety planning and advocacy on a 24-hour in-house crisis line, and long-term supportive services through our Home In Hand Housing Pro

gram and Advocacy Center. Nearly 100 families are served in the emergency shelter each year, and over 5,000 callers are offered safety planning and advocacy on our crisis line. Raphael House also works to enact social change and prevent domestic violence by offering free educational workshops to thousands of teens and adults in the Portland area annually. The mission of Raphael House is to provide a foundation of hope for a life free from family violence, and we have been working in this community—offering domestic violence survivors the tools they need to build violence-free lives—for more than 45 years. Raphael House serves a diverse community of women and children escaping domestic violence, and also works to eliminate the causes of family and intimate partner violence through community education and outreach.

Together we can make sure 150 kids and teens at Raphael House of Portland have everything they need to head back to the classroom next month.

The feds are attempting a discriminatory roll back the Equal Access Rule, which protects access to federally-funded housing resources (including many domestic violence and homeless shelters).

If successful, critical protections for LGBTQIA+ survivors will be removed and trans people could be turned away from services.

This is unconscionable and unacceptable – and as a community, we must resist this unjust attack on equal rights.

Volunteer to support survivors at Raphael House of Portland!

We’re looking for 8-10 people who can support survivors and our advocates weekly – with our Youth & Family program, or in our emergency shelter and on our 24-hour hotline.

These roles require completing a 40-hour Basic Advocacy Training course, so we’ll be screening for placement in our Fall volunteer cohort.

We’re also looking for a monthly Donation Drop-Off volunteer to receive item contributions from the community (training not required).

Happy Juneteenth! Did you know that the celebration of this holiday was first brought to Oregon by Clara Peoples in 1945?

She moved from Oklahoma to work in Portland’s shipyards and was surprised her coworkers didn’t know about the holiday commemorating the day the abolition of slavery was finally enforced in Texas – over 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

She and other community organizers helped start the Juneteenth Oregon Festival in 1972, which has been held annually for over 50 years!

The Clara Peoples Freedom Trail Parade is at 11am SATURDAY at King Elementary School and the festival is from 12-7 at Lillis-Albina Park.
