It's gravid Hummingbird season! This little female is so full of eggs she was resting frequently as she fed off the tiny flowers of this Cascara (Frangula purshiana). The Cascara provides more wildlife value than any other native tree of its size. It has flowers for pollinators and the leaves are food for many native butterflies and moths. It also provides berries for songbirds such as the western tanager.

My honeysuckle has aphids. Many a predator visits and lives in this shrub - from ladybug larvae (pictured) to vespid wasps, parasitoid wasps, bushtits, and beetles just my casual observation. I have also found bees suffering from poison, as evidence by extended tongues and lack of motor control.
Normal pests have a value to the food web. My aphid problem is temporary while spraying poison on plants creates more issues than it's worth. If the insects are poisoned, so are the birds.

I'm not sure if anything brings me more simple happiness than wildlife enjoying my little garden. This gorgeous queen bombus sippin on my red flowering currant on a sunny day is enough to make me smile. I hope it makes you smile too.
