Cruise Ships Exposing Iceland’s Residents to Dangerous Levels of Air Pollution

Air quality measurements recorded during visits of cruise ships – such as the Viking Mars and Sky Princess – to the port of Sundahöfn, in Reykjavík, Iceland, show high air pollution levels with an average of 35-40 times higher than safe low particle levels recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) – 1,000 particles/cm3. via Clean Arctic Alliance

Protest with music!

Fair Sailing has produced a music video highlighting challenges of being Canada’s busiest cruise ship port-of-call. With over 330 ships arriving in 2026, local residents – and the environment – are on the front line of impacts from cruise ship garbage, and cruise ship air and ocean pollution.

“The Modern Cruise Ship Activist Song” explores the cruise industry from a local perspective. It is set to Gilbert & Sullivan’s ‘Major-General's Song' and is a clever and captivating reminder of the multitude of negative impacts forced on port communities.

Barcelona’s New Message: ‘Not One Tourist More’

"The mayor has also just announced a proposal to eliminate cruise ships that only stop for the day. We want zero day-tripping cruise passengers, and to achieve that we’re going to ask the regional authorities to raise the tax on them to the maximum allowed. We want it be so high that it doesn’t make sense to come into the city.

Repairing the residential fabric of the historic center requires a lot of different initiatives working together, but all of them are founded on a basic, inalienable principle, which is the right for residents to stay in the city. A city cannot function without its citizens."

As the commissioner for sustainable tourism, José Antonio Donaire’s job is to diminish the impact of the nearly 16 million annual visitors to the Catalan capital. Here’s what he’s planning.

We don’t talk often enough about the visual pollution caused by cruise ships. How they tower over the neighborhood rooftops of Munjoy Hill, massive floating cities spewing pollutants.

In Odveig Klyve’s “View,” a quiet Norwegian coastal city is invaded by some oppressively large visitors. It is a brilliant example of scale.

Local residents & environmental groups have halted the construction of a new cruise terminal in Italy.

Environmental organizations have raised concerns about dredging, new breakwaters, impacts on protected bird habitats, and the area’s traditional wooden fishing huts built on stilts that have long been part of the local landscape.

Carnival cruises & their exploitation of immigrant labor continues…. but now maritime union organizers are fighting back.

12 hour days, 7 days a week, for 9 months straight with no days off, being paid as little as $2.50 an hour. This is the way foreign flagged cruise ships profit from labor. When you take a cruise, when you host a cruise ship in your port, you are enabling this nightmare.
