A reminder of what we are working so hard to protect from the negative environmental impacts of cruise ships.

People often talk about all the various pollutants in Casco Bay but scrubber wash discharge is something that can actually be eliminated.

If you are planning a visit to Portland (or any one of the beautiful port communities in Maine) you can check Port Call to make sure you are not visiting on a day when a cruise ship will be in port.

You want to avoid the harmful air emissions & congestion in the Old Port.

On World Oceans Day let's protect the waters of Casco Bay by banning scrubber wash discharge, which has the capacity to harm every single living marine creature, from the tiniest zoo plankton to our essential lobsters.

She’s back…….

The port collects approximately $3 million in restricted cruise revenue. Using ICCT emission factors and EPA health cost methodology, we estimate the air pollution from cruise ships costs our community $5 million in health harms this season — asthma, ER visits, lost work days — all absorbed by Portland families and never counted in a cost of cruise tourism.
The ships sail away.
The harm stays here.

Many people are concerned about NOx emissions from Wyman Station’s heavy oil combustion — the same pollutants cruise ships emit while idling for hours at berth. Where is the scrutiny for the cruise ships?

This season 124 cruise ships will generate NOx, SOx, and particulate matter over our waterfront and neighborhoods, and discharge an estimated tens of thousands of metric tons of toxic scrubber washwater into Casco Bay — all while cruise passengers represented just 7% of Greater Portland’s visitors and roughly 1% of direct visitor spending in 2024.

The environmental costs fall on Portland residents. The profits leave with the ships.
