Nursing Mothers Counsel was established over 40 years ago and has served many families across Oregon and Southern Washington by providing breastfeeding education, peer support, and affordable breast pump rentals. In early 2022, our board members came to the difficult decision to dissolve Nursing Mothers Counsel as a 501c3 in Oregon.

However, we are excited to announce that our pump program will live on at Northwest Mothers Milk Bank . As of now, all pump rentals will be handled through the milk bank. If you are currently renting a pump, you have received a separate email with further details. If you would like to learn more about a new pump rental, please call the milk bank at 503-469-0955 or visit www.donatemilk.org/pump-rental.

Have you been advised to give solids at 4 months?

Have you been advised to give solids at 4 months?

If your doctor (or child health nurse, chiropractor etc) is telling you to introduce solids at 4 months, they are going DIRECTLY AGAINST most organisations around the world which recommend introducing solids at 6 months, not 4. While some of the organisations listed here will state, "around 6 months", they do not mean 4 months! They mean maybe a few days before 6 months...not 2 months earlier!

The recommendations are clear...6 months. Not 4.

For more on this, check out my article on starting solids: https://themilkmeg.com/baby-ready-solids-introduce/

In SOME rare cases, introducing solids earlier might make sense. If this is the case, ask your doctor WHY they are recommending this. Allergies is not reason that is evidence based. There is not sufficient evidence to suggest starting solids at 4 months actually leads to a decreased risk in developing allergies.

If you’re pregnant you may be wondering whether to get the vaccine. The CDC has recently strengthened its vaccine recommendation for pregnant people.

COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for all people ages 12 and older, including people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to get pregnant now, or might become pregnant in the future.

Pregnant and recently pregnant people are more likely to get severely ill with COVID-19 compared with non-pregnant people. Fortunately, severe illness from COVID-19 during pregnancy can be avoided by getting fully vaccinated.

In recent weeks, infections among pregnant people have been increasing. With the combination of low rates of vaccinations in pregnant people, the spread of the highly transmissible Delta variant, and the higher risk of complications from COVID-19 during pregnancy β€”it’s important to protect yourself if you are pregnant.
