Our garden project is participating in the , a 30-day fundraising challenge and we could really use your support TODAY!
Please help us raise $1000 to make the most of our precious plantable space in Portland!
The East End Community School sits atop Munjoy Hill in Portland, Maine—Longfellow’s hometown “seated by the sea”—where we are “empowering students of the world for the world.” Here at East End, children and teachers from 36 different countries, speaking 31 different languages, come to learn and grow together. Among the languages spoken are Portuguese, Spanish, Somali, Arabic, French, and American Sign Language, as East End also hosts the Maine Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing for children from across the State of Maine. More than half of East End students are learning English as a second, third, or fourth language, and more than four in five students are eligible for the free lunch program. Thanks to years of collaborative efforts from local partners, neighborhood volunteers, and a dedicated garden educator, East End now has a vibrant school garden across the street, where a variety of vegetables, herbs, berries, and even Italian plums are grown, harvested, and shared with students, teachers, families, and neighbors alike.
In times of inflation and tightening budgets, however, our existing garden continues to need annual maintenance and improvements, including replacement of raised beds and well-weathered compost bins. Meanwhile, across the street, around, and even atop the school itself, which has a partial “green” rooftop, more than 1,000 square feet of earth lie largely fallow—covered in dark mulch, w**ds, or well-intentioned-but-long-forgotten plantings. Together with our community partners and supporters, we aim to make the highest and best use of every inch of arable soil at East End, by planting and tending diverse and resilient indigenous perennials, edibles, and more to improve the climate (in every sense of that phrase) and to provide food for migrating monarchs, local birds and pollinators, and the bodies and minds of East End’s children.
Thank you for helping us seize and make the most of this opportunity!
