Just like any genre of music, Chinese lion dance has a traditional sound that is an important part of the performance 🥁 Music creates the rhythm that guides the lion’s movements, from playful steps and curious gestures to jumps, bows, and moments of rest.

The music also helps tell the lion’s story. Changes in rhythm and tempo can communicate different emotions and moments in the performance, creating a feeling that goes beyond what we see. Even if you don’t know the meaning behind every movement, you can feel the music, the rhythm, and the emotion of the lion dance as you watch.

Come immerse yourself in the magical lion dance performances happening this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, September 4-6!

Across cultures and regions, this traditional performance takes many forms, each shaped by its own history, music, movements, and visual style.

Today, we’re highlighting three of several different forms of lion dance. Chinese lion dance is commonly divided into Northern (Běi Shī, 北獅) and Southern/Cantonese (Nán Shī, 南獅) styles, while Japan has its own unique tradition known as Shishimai.

Experience Southern-style lion dance and Shishimai during our Lion Dance & Kung Fu Weekends, now till September 6! ⏳
