This is shelter building through workforce development, and exactly what the industry-led Building to Scale program was created to do: build careers and build shelter. 🛠️🏠

At Family Promise of Greater Washington County, Building to Scale trainees put their skills to work building a modular storage shed that will help support the family shelter. They worked alongside Builder Captain Nathan Young and fellow instructors Pete Victoor and Kegan Flanderka, with HBF Executive Director Regan Schutz on site with the crew.

The new space gives families a place to store their belongings while they’re in shelter and gives Family Promise room to collect household donations families can take with them when they move into permanent housing. As part of the larger HBF shelter project, the Beaverton shelter is also expanding from two family rooms to four.

This is Home Building Foundation-HomeAid Portland’s mission coming full circle. It’s giving purpose to learning, putting new skills to work on a real shelter project, and preparing the next generation for careers in the home building industry.

Using a repeatable template, Building to Scale trainees were able to build quickly while gaining hands-on experience alongside industry mentors. 🛠️

After Pickathon, the seating will move to Home Building Foundation shelter projects throughout the community, where it will continue to be used and enjoyed. ♻️

Pickathon starts tomorrow, but the impact of The Paddock main stage will last well beyond the festival!

Last week, the Home Building Foundation brought together Building to Scale trainees and industry professionals to build 28 timber modules for Pickathon’s main stage.

As Eric Wenzel of Scott Edwards Architecture explains, the lumber will be reused after the festival to support p:ear’s work revitalizing Old Town, including its skatepark.

Last week, Building To Scale trainees and graduates were gifted student memberships to the Home Building Association of Greater Portland.

They’re already putting those memberships to use: several attended a happy hour hosted by HBA's Professional Women in Building making connections that will help support their careers in the home building industry.
