Volunteeer Opportunities Available!

Volunteers play a meaningful role in the daily ministry of UGM, helping create steady, welcoming spaces where people can receive practical care and take their next step. This month, we are highlighting two volunteer opportunities where simple acts of service can make a real difference.

At the UGM Thrift Store, volunteers help sort donations, organize merchandise, and keep the store ready for shoppers. This practical service gives donated items new purpose and supports the broader work of life change happening across UGM.

At the Old Town front desk, volunteers offer hospitality in one of UGM’s busiest ministry spaces. By welcoming guests, answering basic questions, and helping people find their next step, front desk volunteers help create a calm and caring first point of connection.

For much of his adult life, Cory was stuck in a cycle he couldn’t seem to break.

Growing up in Portland, he spent decades battling alcohol addiction and trying to manage life on his own. There were seasons of recovery and seasons of relapse. He worked hard, held jobs and often hid his struggles from the people around him.

Looking back, Cory describes it as “living the up and down kind of roller coaster life.”

After years of trying different recovery programs, another setback left him searching for a different path. That’s when he arrived at Union Gospel Mission’s LifeChange program.

A big thank you to Metro Community Church from Canada for traveling all the way to Portland to serve our neighbors experiencing homelessness!

Together with our Food Services and Homeless Outreach team, their group helped serve more than 200 meals to people facing homelessness, hunger, addiction, and abuse.

We’re grateful for their heart to serve, their generosity, and their willingness to care for our community. Thank you, Metro Community Church, for showing up and serving alongside us!

👧 Children’s Activity Center Assistant
Provide safe, nurturing, trauma-informed care for children while their families are part of the Women’s LifeChange community.

🤝 Outreach Assistant
Build relationships with people experiencing homelessness, meet practical needs, and connect individuals with resources and pathways toward lasting change.

👕 Thrift Store Clothing Intake Specialist
Sort and prepare donated clothing, identify quality items, and help turn everyday donations into resources that support UGM’s work throughout our community.

Veronica has lived on the streets for many years; our team recently had the chance to chat with her and listen to her experience.

"When we get turned down and looked at like we're nothing but disgraces," Veronica says, "it's harder for us to want to maintain our lives out here. We feel like we're nothing, not even a part of the community."

Five nights a week our Search + Rescue mobile outreach team visits people experiencing homelessness all over the Portland Metro area providing basic needs like meals, clothes, and hygiene items.

When asked about our Search + Rescue outreach team, she shared, “It means everything to me. They’re not just the Union Gospel Mission coming out and just giving us food. They’re like family. They know almost everybody here by their name. They know a little bit about their lives.”

Search + Rescue, along with all our outreach efforts, is designed to show dignity and care to everyone we meet, regardless of their circumstances and challenges. We meet each person where they are, and learn the next step they can take to move out of homelessness and into a life that is healthy and thriving.

Intake is more than a first step. It is the beginning of trust, safety, and hope.

When someone comes to us seeking help, they may be facing addiction, recovery, unsafe living conditions, abuse, housing instability, or another difficult transition. Our Intake Coordinators meet each person where they are, with dignity, honor, respect, and compassion.

Many of our Intake Coordinators bring real-life experience and a deep understanding of the situations our guests are navigating. They take the time to listen, build trust, address immediate needs, and work one-on-one with each individual to identify the best next step.

When we cannot provide the service someone needs, our team works alongside trusted community partners and providers to help connect them with appropriate resources. And when the time is right, we hope to welcome them into our LifeChange Program and support their journey toward long-term recovery and transformation.

Our Intake Coordinators are a lifeline, a steady presence during uncertain moments, and an important part of helping people see that a different path is possible.

We are incredibly grateful for the work they do every day. ❤️
