Many of our public lands hold stories of important Native American contributions, including several parks in the Midwest. In honor of November being , we will look at some of the unique places that honor the diverse cultures, tribes, traditions and histories of Native Americans throughout the region. Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site in North Dakota is a great place to explore the lives of the Northern Plains Indians on the Upper Missouri River. Earthlodge people hunted bison and other game and lived in villages along the Missouri and its tributaries. The site was a major Native American trade center for hundreds of years prior to becoming an important market place for fur traders after 1750. Today, visitors can enter a full scale reconstructed Earthlodge, see the remains of the Awatixa Xi'e Village (Lower Hidatsa Site) and Awatixa Village (Sakakawea Site), and view exhibits featuring artifacts recovered from the village sites as well as decorative arts of Northern Plains Indians. http://www.nps.gov/knri/index.htm
