Community Doulas

Community Doulas Community Doulas provides experienced, non-judgemental doula support to low-income families in Maine.

Community Doulas provides free doula services to low-income families in Maine by connecting doulas with families in need. A doula provides physical, emotional, and educational support to their client. Doulas work with a family prenatally to prepare for the birth, stay for the duration of the labour (whether at home, in a birthing center, or at a hospital) and assist with the postpartum adjustment.

Doulas encourage, normalize, coach and act as a living resource guide. They bear witness to the amazing transformation that birth is.

🌱 Community Doulas is growing — and we need YOU!
We're reaching more families than ever, expanding our doula training programs, and doing some of our best work yet. To keep that momentum going, we're looking for enthusiastic volunteers to support our fundraising efforts and community events.

No birth experience needed — just a heart for health equity and a willingness to pitch in. This is a flexible, as-needed role, not a ongoing weekly commitment, so it fits into real life.

If you believe every family deserves compassionate support during birth and the postpartum period — and you want to help make that possible — we want to hear from you.

📩 Reach out at [email protected] or PM us here to learn more or express your interest.

Laughter is more than joy—it’s a physiological support tool we carry with us everywhere. As community doulas, we witness daily how laughter can soften hard moments and reconnect people to their bodies and each other.
Proven benefits of laughter on the human body:

✨ Regulates stress hormones
Laughter lowers cortisol and adrenaline, helping the nervous system shift out of fight‑or‑flight—a powerful support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

💗 Supports heart health & circulation
Laughing increases blood flow and improves vascular function, offering gentle cardiovascular benefits without strain.

🧠 Boosts mood & mental resilience
Laughter triggers the release of endorphins and dopamine, improving mood, reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression, and increasing pain tolerance.
🫁 Improves breathing & oxygenation
A good laugh stimulates deep breathing, increasing oxygen intake and encouraging relaxation of tight chest and diaphragm muscles.

🛡️ Strengthens immune function
Laughter has been shown to increase immune cells and antibodies, supporting the body’s ability to heal and protect itself.

🤍 Builds connection & trust
Shared laughter fosters bonding, reduces isolation, and strengthens relationships—core elements of birth work and community care.

Today we celebrate laughter as medicine, connection, and resilience—for birthing people, families, and doulas alike.

May your day be filled with ease, softness, and a few good belly laughs.

Stress can shape birth and postpartum experiences in powerful ways—and doulas play a key role in helping lower it.

A doula’s calm, steady presence helps the nervous system feel safer. Through continuous emotional support, gentle touch, reassurance, and advocacy, doulas help birthing people feel heard, supported, and less alone. This sense of safety can ease tension in labor and support smoother bonding and recovery postpartum.

After birth, doulas continue to reduce stress by holding space—listening without judgment, offering practical support, and reminding families they don’t have to do everything on their own.

Lower stress isn’t about having a “perfect” birth. It’s about feeling supported every step of the way. Every birthing person deserves the option to feel this support.
