We’ve been studying the future of vacant and underutilized properties in Parkrose — and now we want to start sharing what we learned.

The Planning for Vacant Properties study was created to help Historic Parkrose and the community better understand where opportunities for reinvestment exist along NE Sandy Boulevard and how future development can better reflect community priorities.

The study found 33 vacant sites and 135 underutilized sites within the Historic Parkrose Business District. These properties represent potential opportunities for housing, local businesses, community spaces, and other neighborhood-serving uses.

But the report is not just about vacant land. Community engagement was a major part of the work. Residents, businesses, students, and community members consistently talked about the need for more local businesses, gathering spaces, youth and family activities, safer and more walkable streets, green space, housing, and stronger support for the people already living and working in Parkrose.

The study also emphasizes that reinvestment should be paired with equity and anti-displacement strategies, so that growth creates benefits for current residents and businesses instead of pushing them out.

This is the first of several posts where we’ll share the most important findings from the study, explain the community’s priorities, and show how tools like the Development Compass can help guide future investment.

We want the public to understand this work and be part of the conversation.

Because of the incredible support of our community, the fundraising campaign for Parkrose Local Grocery has officially surpassed its goal.
We are deeply grateful to every neighbor, business, community member, and supporter who donated, shared the campaign, encouraged Don, and helped bring attention to the importance of having a locally committed grocery store serving Parkrose.
Reaching this goal is an important milestone, but the work is not finished yet. The project is still moving through the steps needed to make the store a reality, and Historic Parkrose remains committed to supporting Don and his vision for a grocery store that serves and invests in our community.
This campaign showed something powerful: Parkrose shows up for Parkrose.
Thank you for believing in this project and for being part of it. We will continue sharing updates as the next steps develop.
