It's day two of sharing client success stories from Sponsors Organized to Assist Refugees (SOAR). All identifiable details have been removed.

In early 2025, a single mother from a South American country, arrived in the U.S. with her three children, hoping to reunite with her partner. But when the relationship ended, she found herself alone—heartbroken, financially unstable, and facing eviction, with no place to go and no one to turn to.

Just as she was losing hope, a local church offered a temporary cottage—and SOAR stepped in to help her rebuild her life again. With support from a SOAR case manager and school specialist, the family moved into the cottage, where a team of volunteers was ready to welcome them. Her children were quickly enrolled in a nearby school, and for the first time since arriving, she found a safe place to regroup and begin putting her life back together.

SOAR’s volunteers surrounded the family with care: bringing food, offering Spanish-English interpretation, emotional support, childcare, cultural guidance, and housing orientation. Knowing she had to start a job as a housekeeper at a hotel the very next day, volunteers even provided bus training that same evening so she could get to work.

She was soon connected with the local Venezuelan community found by volunteers. A dedicated group of volunteers now offer one-on-one ESL tutoring, finding nearby food banks, and financial / cultural orientation to support her long-term goals.

Today, she is working and feeling hopeful again—grateful to SOAR’s staff and the community that showed her she was never truly alone. Her story is a powerful example of how resettlement agencies and volunteers can transform a moment of crisis into the beginning of a new life.

As part of our focus on Sponsors Organized to Assist Refugees (SOAR) this month, we will be sharing client success stories for the next week. All identifiable details have been removed.

A young woman from Central Africa, arrived in the U.S. in 2024 with two younger siblings, having lost both parents. As the eldest, she stepped into the role of a parent and a caretaker—determined to give her siblings a better future.

From day one, SOAR and its trained volunteers surrounded the family with vital support. SOAR provided food and clothing during their hotel stay, helped secure permanent housing, furnished the apartment, and offered transportation and bus orientation. SOAR staff also guided the family through cultural navigation and daily life in their new community.

Thanks to this support, the children are thriving in school and have part-time jobs. The young woman has completed a CNA course and now works full-time as a caregiver. She harbors ambitions and is actively applying for hospital positions as a CNA to grow her career and continue providing for the family.

This is a story of resilience—and a testament to how resettlement agencies and volunteers can help turn hardship into hope.

Since the 1970s, the generosity of congregations, community groups and individuals has enabled Sponsors Organized to Assist Refugees (SOAR) to welcome and assist our new neighbors as they arrive in Oregon.

A program of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, SOAR resettles hundreds of refugees a year in Oregon. We link sponsors—congregations, friends or community organizations—with refugees before they arrive in the United States, and help sponsors welcome and assist the refugees in their adjustment to a new life in our community. Refugees are welcomed, given temporary homes with household items and food, and offered assistance as they learn a new language, develop job skills and search for employment.

Who are these neighbors? They are families from Africa, Southeast Asia, the former Soviet Union, Cuba/Haiti, Latin America and the Middle East. Many come here fleeing persecution and countries torn by war. Often they arrive with no more than the clothes they are wearing.

SOAR is an affiliate of CWS.
