As a kid, one of the most joyful things to do was going to the roller rink. I didn’t go often, but I always loved the lights, the music, and the soaring feeling of being on skates (or blades, as was the case at the time). As for derby, when I first saw Whip It, I was completely enthralled. It was clear that derby was something I needed to try at some point in my life...eventually...someday. A close friend and soon-to-be teammate encouraged me to take the leap, which involved a lot of fumbling around on a tennis court to get accustomed to quad skates.
Has being a part of the roller derby community helped you connect with other Q***r Skaters in a positive way?
Most assuredly. I grew up in a town where q***rness was an anomaly, just something completely unseen. Derby was the first real forum for me where q***rness was not only visible, but reveled in. It has provided a beautiful space to not only form strong bonds with other q***r skaters, as teammates and trusted friends, but to explore my own q***r identity. Continued in comments :
