This fall, Salmon Watch hit the road a little differently thanks to support from PGE’s Drive Change Fund, made possible by the Oregon DEQ’s Clean Fuels Program 🚗⚡
WSC is reducing our carbon footprint while expanding access to outdoor education.
By using our new electric vehicle to deliver riverside education programs, WSC drove over 2,000 miles while preventing 1.1 tons of CO₂ emissions—the equivalent of what 5.7 Douglas fir saplings would sequester over 10 years. 🌲✨
Every mile matters when it comes to protecting salmon and their watersheds. Cleaner transportation helps us live our values as we continue teaching students about Pacific Salmon and the rocky river habitats essential for their survival. 💙🐟

⏰ Today is the last chance to double your impact for wild salmon and kids outdoors in 2025!
It’s the final day of the year, and the final opportunity to have your gift matched dollar-for-dollar thanks to the generosity of The Friends of World Salmon Council. Every donation made before midnight will go twice as far to connect kids from underserved communities to wild salmon, healthy rivers, and environmental stewardship.
Your year-end gift helps create future river advocates, scientists, and conservationists, starting with boots in the water and hands in the stream.
💥 Don’t miss this moment. Give before midnight and double your impact.

As we look back on this year, we’re grateful for every student who stepped into a river, every moment of wonder sparked by wild salmon, and every supporter who made it possible 💙
Because of you, kids from underserved communities experienced the outdoors in powerful, hands-on ways, building connection to salmon, clean water, and the environment we all share.
As we head into the final days of the year, all donations are being matched, doubling your impact for kids, rivers, and wild salmon. If you’ve been thinking about giving, now is the time to do it.
✨ Give before the year ends and make your support go twice as far.

Macroinvertebrates may be small, but they speak volumes.

From caddisfly larvae to stonefly nymphs, mayflies, mussels, and crayfish—these tiny stream dwellers thrive in clean, cold, oxygen-rich water. When we find them in our rivers, it’s a sign the ecosystem is doing well.

So yes, we stole their look…
But more importantly, we’re learning to listen to what they’re telling us about our watersheds.

Healthy streams = thriving macroinvertebrates = thriving salmon 💙🐟

Every fall, when our students wade into cold streams and see wild salmon return, something changes in them. They start to see how rivers, forests, and people are all connected, and how much power they have to protect the world around them.
At World Salmon Council, we believe every young person deserves the chance to experience these transformative moments in nature. Because when kids connect with wild salmon, they become stewards.
🎥 Watch our Board President and Founder, Michael Knapp, share our story and vision for getting kids outside for years to come.

This Giving Tuesday: Make TWICE the impact for the next generation of environmental stewards. 🌲🐟
EVERY dollar given today is matched 100%.
Your support gives kids hands-on learning in salmon habitats, experience in ecosystem science, and the joy of being outdoors.
You’re also helping more students from underserved communities experience the rivers, salmon, and wild places that shape our region.
Double your impact for kids, for salmon, for the environment we all share.

It’s a week of gratitude and excitement here at World Salmon Council! 💧🐟
As we reflect on a year of getting students from all backgrounds outdoors, we’re filled with hope for what’s ahead—and eager to reach even more kids in 2026.
💚 This year, Friends of World Salmon Council have stepped up to make a difference: every donation made on December 2, Giving Tuesday, will be matched 100%! 🙌
That means double the impact, helping more students from under-resourced communities experience wild salmon, healthy rivers, and the incredible ecosystems we all share.

This year, thousands of kids traded screens for streams — and discovered what it means to be caretakers of their environment. 🐟💧

Through Salmon Watch, they waded in streams, tested water quality, and watched wild salmon fight their way home. They learned how salmon connect forests, rivers, and communities — and why protecting them means protecting all of us.

Big love to our amazing volunteers, teachers, and partners who make these moments happen. You’re helping raise the next generation of salmon stewards — curious, confident, and ready to care for the world around them. 💚

What a beautiful morning at Coho and Coffee! ☕🐟
Thank you to everyone who joined us at Eagle Creek to witness salmon spawning and connect over coffee. There’s nothing quite like watching these incredible fish complete their journey home while surrounded by fellow salmon enthusiasts.

What’s a Redd? The Salmon’s Nest with a Purpose 🐟

When it comes to the incredible journey of Pacific salmon, most people think about their upstream swim to spawn. But fewer know about the final act of this journey: the creation of a redd.

What is a redd?
A redd is a shallow nest that a female salmon digs in the gravel of a river or stream bed. Using powerful strokes of her tail, she displaces fine sediment and digs a small depression. This clean, oxygen-rich gravel is the perfect spot for laying her eggs.

Why is it important?
Once she lays her eggs, the female covers them with more gravel for protection. These redds serve as incubators for the next generation of salmon, keeping the eggs safe from predators and strong currents. A single female may lay thousands of eggs and may dig multiple redds in one area.

Signs of a redd:
Clean, light-colored gravel (compared to the darker surrounding riverbed)
A pit or mound shape near shallow water
Often found in clusters during spawning season

What can we do?
Redds are fragile! When walking near rivers in the fall and early winter, stay out of the streambed and avoid disturbing gravel bars. Even stepping near a redd can crush the eggs beneath the surface.

Boots on, nets ready — it’s Salmon Watch season once again!
We kicked off our first field trip of the fall last Friday with 11th graders from Centennial High school!
Almost every day throughout October and November, we will be out by the rivers with 4th–12th grade classes experiencing the life cycle of salmon and the wild ecosystems that make the Pacific Northwest forests the perfect place for these crucial creatures.
This programming wouldn't be possible without our incredible volunteers and agency partners — you make this season possible! 💚
