We train the people who work with the Mercys of the world, those traumatized and left orphaned, and those who overnight lose their world. The goodness of God is demonstrated through these faithful carers. They had so many questions, and little training in trauma-informed care. There are too many children for the amount of caregivers. They live with secondary trauma from all they hear and see. And yet they rise again. Listen again. Love again. They have propellers on their backs and rockets on their feet.

We were invited to come and train the staff of Christian Faith Ministries (CFM) in Nigeria, using our tool, the Celebrating Children Workshop. Their staff, due to the crisis nature of their work, were not prepared for the reality of working with traumatized women and children. Our participants were those who worked in the crisis care homes, those who worked with the women in Mara’s house, teachers in the school they run with over 900 children, missionaries who serve at some of the 250 mission stations across the Sahel nations and those who train the missionaries and visit them.

John Bosco Tuli Aryam, director of Elwa Sunrise School, describes the road around his school ‘in sorry state’. And he says ‘Most of the pupils come from low-income families. Their parents work long hours or lack reliable transportation, making it hard for them to get to school. Without a bus, many of these children struggle to attend consistently, leading to missed opportunities for learning and growth.’

We still have a huge knowledge gap in today’s world. This has been driven home to us as we have worked among the most economically vulnerable. This is why we are so determined to push forward with our training and center our work in Loom on multiplying our training and equipping grassroots facilitators. This is the foundation on which our work stands. All the extra layers of early childhood education and healthcare stand on the shoulders of this core truth – that God has intentions for how our brain develops and what is needed for that to happen, for the growth of our emotional capacity, as well as the knowledge we need for life, for growing spiritually and becoming strong members in a thriving community.

As we train the early childhood educators, healthcare workers, the parents and the Sunday school teachers we are part of creating the thriving communities for which we long.

October 11 is the International Day of the Girl Child set by UNICEF

"This year’s theme conveys both the need for urgent action and persistent hope, driven by the power of girls’ voices and vision for the future.
Today’s generation of girls is disproportionately affected by global crises of climate, conflict, poverty and pushback on hard won gains for human rights and gender equality. Too many girls are still denied their rights, restricting their choices and limiting their futures.
Yet, recent analysis shows that girls are not only courageous in the face of crisis, but hopeful for the future. Every day, they are taking action to realize a vision of a world in which all girls are protected, respected and empowered.
But girls cannot realize this vision alone. They need allies who listen to and respond to their needs."

Scientific studies emphasize this critical need for humans. According to the National Institute for Health, “Self-care means taking the time to do things that help you live well and improve both your physical health and mental health. This can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy. Even small acts of self-care in your daily life can have a big impact.”

In February, during our last CCW training in Arusha, Tanzania we intentionally devoted time to emphasizing the importance of the practice of self-care. Five different stations were created around the facility where we were. The participants were divided into groups and group by group they rotated through the program so that they could personally experience each form of refreshment and renewal.

Many years ago I read an article that stuck with me. It stated that the greatest danger facing a woman in Afghanistan is to get pregnant. This fact shook me. Yet, our experience in East Africa confirms this, 87% of global maternal deaths occur in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

Edward, who oversees the Engikaret location where there is a clinic in Tanzania, shared his reality with us. “Before this clinic was here, the women and children were passing a hard time, especially the time of delivery. Personally, five women delivered in my car while I was rushing them to hospital. Two of them lost their babies because of delays, one of them gave birth to twins in the car and we lost one; and the rest of the babies are alive.”
