About Us
The Ebony Collective Community Development Corporation began when a Portland Native by the name of ShaToyia Bentley was inspired by the concept The Right to the City and presented in her Theory and Philosophy of Community class why she felt Black Portlanders had the right to the City of Portland. She felt strongly about organizing Black Portlanders to have a community again that she got her Bachelors in Community Development.
Bentley attended events, community based organization meetings and start-up non-profits when she found out about the Urban Renewal Areas development in East County while working for the regional government. Even though several organizations were doing great work, she felt like there was still a need for Black Portlanders and Black regional residents to claim the areas as their own in union. Bentley decided to create a non-profit that would benefit all black residents in the region.
She invited various black residents from the region that has done various things in the region that goes unnoticed. Five people met on June 13th and agreed on the name The Ebony Collective with the mission to provide resources and promote social change that benefit the many, not just a few. The organization focus is being a resource, social justice advocacy and educational organization rooted in culturally specific and community led practices/services that uplifts youth, individuals and families to reach their full potential in the Region.
The board of directors is excited to help make change within the region.
