Had a lovely conversation this morning with the Maine State Board of Education. We talked about so many elements of education in our state, including things worth celebrating and issues that need attention. I was grateful for the time to get into some of the nuances that are present in issues facing students and teachers, because anyone in education knows that nothing is quite as simple and straightforward as headlines, soundbites, and charts might have us believe.

Mostly, I'm grateful for leadership that seeks to include the voices of folks who have varied backgrounds and experience related to decisions that are being made! Thank you all for a your advocacy and inclusion. I look forward to continuing many of these conversations!

At just 30 years old, high school science teacher Allyson Gilbert '18 has already studied in the United Kingdom, taught English in American Samoa, traveled to Morocco as a Fulbright researcher, taken groups of high school students to Belize and Greece, scouted locations in Tanzania, earned multiple degrees and been named Sagadahoc County, Maine's Teacher of the Year.
