In 1971, the National Cancer Act declared the War on Cancer. At that time, the overall 5-year survival for lung cancer was 13.6%. While the survival rates for other cancers have increased dramatically in the intervening years up to 2011, the survival rate for lung cancer has remained relatively the same. It's time to make our voices heard and have lung cancer be recognized as a public health priority.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States - accounting for 15% of all cancer incidence and nearly 1/3 of all cancer deaths. In 2011, lung cancer claimed more lives than breast, prostate, colon, liver, kidney and melanoma cancers -- COMBINED. It's time to make our voices heard and have lung cancer be recognized as a public health priority.
