We have spent quite a bit of time the last few weeks supporting some individuals who are in crisis (due to addiction and mental illness). In and out of detox. Spend a few days in a facility or program, then right back out. A few days of emotional highs and a few days of really low lows. Paranoia, depression, suicidal ideation, and on it goes. This isn’t new work, we’ve done this for years with many people. The good news is they’re housed. The reality, however, is that housing didn’t “fix” them. It also isn’t making it easier to access much needed care and help. Thankfully they have a community around them checking on them and doing all they can to help. But, if they didn’t have that, what then? People are complex and their needs are complex. There isn’t a one size fits all solution. Housing, while necessary, doesn’t free people from addiction or lead to mental stability and health. It takes a community of loving people, a full menu of complete services (with enough capacity to meet the need), and the grace of Jesus to truly transform a person. That should be the goal - transformation - freedom, self-sufficiency, upward mobility, and healthy living. It’s hard, but it’s worth it.
