The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church established a mission in Portland, Maine in 1891, after a number of the cityโ€™s African-American residents petitioned Bishop J. Robinson, who along with charter members, Moses Green, Ellen Odin, and others met in a hall on Temple Street. In the early years, the congregation moved to various halls on Preble, Free, Congress and Montfort Streets. But in 1907

, on the urging of Reverend George F. Green, who said โ€œThere is no church society in this city that is at all interested in the spiritual uplift of our people, except it is the churches among ourselves.โ€ Moses Green and the church trustees purchased a house lot at 95 Monument Street. Reverend William H. Lamar presided over the ground breaking ceremony for a new church building and in 1914; the edifice was completed and dedicated by Bishop Alexander Walters.

For the last two weeks, our Pastor has been teaching from Ecclesiastes 3:1โ€“11 (NLT), and today he challenged us through the 5th verse.

In this Pentecost season, God is calling the Church back to prophetic discernment โ€” to scatter what destroys, gather what heals, embrace what is holy, and turn away from anything that opposes justice, truth, and the liberating power of Christ.

And what a powerful response:
9 souls saved
The sacred ceremony of baptism

In a world full of noise, today reminded us that God is still moving, still transforming lives, and still calling people home.

What a way to end the conference year.
What a Pentecost Sunday. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ
