Join Maeve for a tree walk in Powell Butte Natural Area on Thursday June 4th at 6 PM! At 611 Acres, Powell Butte is one of the largest parks in Portland! Come join us for a guided walk through some of the different ecosystems there. We will mainly focus on the meadow area of the park but will talk a little about the forests and wetland that surround it.

You see that bucket? You know what that means! It's been a dry spring, so it's time to start watering your young trees.

Lack of summer water is the leading cause of death for young trees. Your new tree needs a deep weekly watering of 15-20 gallons, one day per week for its first 5 summers, plus a second watering during periods over 85° F.

You can make your own slow-drip watering system by drilling 1/16” holes in the side of a 5-gal bucket, or purchase a watering bag. Don’t forget to mulch! Proper mulch has many benefits, like conserving moisture and preventing weeds, and protecting from lawnmowers and trimmers.

As Earth Month wraps up, so does our planting season. Together, thousands of volunteers planted over 30,000 trees and native plants! And we followed up planting with guidance to tree recipients and stewardship events for native plants, to make sure that the impact of all this work endures.

Happy ! When you plant a tree—or shrub, or some other plant—you’re kicking off a life in community with so many other lives. That’s what being a tree is all about, that’s what Earth Month is all about. Trees breathe out, we breathe in.

It’s almost the end of the planting season at Friends of Trees, and we’re almost at our goal of 30,000 new trees and native plants, all planted with the power of volunteers. Talk about community!

Today is a great day to donate: Thanks to our $5,000 Earth Day challenge, your donation doubles! Your donation plants trees. It also supports our summer programs, when we care for the trees we've planted, maintain natural areas we've worked in, work with high school interns on pruning and other green jobs skills, and prepare with our partners for next season.
