We're delighted to feature the first of the current Center for Animal Law Studies Ambassadors selected through our Global Ambassador Program: Gladys Kamsanyu ('20, Animal Law LLM, Uganda). ๐Ÿงก

Gladys focused her project on the Nakaseke District, one of Ugandaโ€™s wildlife crime hotspots, where she has been organizing community outreach events to promote coexistence between people and wildlife. By educating residents about the need to protect wildlife and offering sustainable alternatives to poaching, Gladys aims to involve local community members in conservation efforts, reduce human-wildlife conflict, and preserve threatened species for generations to come.

Gladys is one of four selected Lewis & Clark Law School animal law alumni to serve as CALS Ambassadors for 2025-2026. ๐ŸŽ‰

It's World Otter Day! ๐Ÿฆฆ In honor of the occasion, Zoe Morton, rising 3L and Center for Animal Law Studies law clerk, is raising awareness about river otter protection.

She writes: "Here at Lewis & Clark, we love river otters. With river otters recently selected as Lewis & Clarkโ€™s new mascot, it is worth looking past the cute photos to consider issues impacting river otters. Every year on the last Wednesday of May, World Otter Day invites people across the globe to celebrate otters while raising awareness and support for their protection."

Zoe explores a threat that you may not have considered: the growing exploitation of river otters in captivity for exotic animal cafes and roadside zoos. As we celebrate otters around the world today, read here to learn more about how to avoid contributing to cruelty: https://law.lclark.edu/live/news/58315-world-otter-day-cruelty-behind-cuteness

Alumni & Current Student Update! โญ

At the Center for Animal Law Studies we love a good collaboration! This one by Lewis & Clark Law School Animal Law LLM alumni David Raatz ('24) and Animal Law LLM candidate Savannah Sherman, Esq. is a fantastic example.

David and Savannah are among the founding members of the Animal Law Section of the Hawaii State Bar Association. The new Animal Law Section was created in February 2025, and it's already making its mark. In this article recently published in the Hawaii Bar Journal, David and Savannah share the promise of animal law in Hawaiโ€˜i, stating that:

"Animal advocacy improves the lives of not just animals, but humans too. Advocating for the humane treatment and conservation of animals may also improve the health of the environment, foster safety in domestic relationships, and promote community involvement. Protecting critical habitat, for instance, not only protects the animals that inhabit it but also preserves the ecosystem and the human connection to the land."

Congratulations to David and Savannah for their work advancing animal law in Hawaiโ€˜i, and Mahalo! ๐ŸŽ‰ ๐ŸŒบ Read their article here: https://law.lclark.edu/live/files/38054-introducing-the-animal-law-section-hawaii-bar

Lewis & Clark Law School Professor of Practice Joyce Tischler is featured among legal experts in this month's Oregon State Bar Bulletin piece "Understanding Pet Custody."

"Judges are humans, and oftentimes they have dogs or cats or both, and they love their companion animals," says Tischler. "And cats and dogs are becoming more part of the family. And so some judges are willing to look at this battle over who gets the dog as a family matter and find that they will look at it similarly to how they view who the child is to live with."
