Indigo Arts Alliance is proud to announce our 2026-2027 David C. Driskell Fellowship Cohort! Named in honor of our esteemed Elder Advisor, David C. Driskell, this fellowship provides time and space for Maine-based/rooted Black and Brown artists to focus on creative production with 6 months rent-free studio space in our Black Seed Studio.

✨Sascha Rose will be in fellowship from June 1 - November 13, 2026. Rose is a first-generation Haitian-American musician and filmmaker who grew up in Maine. Her Haitian roots have long inspired her work, as she tells stories of colonial resistance, liberation, and connection to the divine and natural world through music and film. As she expands her musical practice to include drum machines and loop pedals, she is exploring the intersections of electronic production and Black folk music.

✨Mia Muntu will be in fellowship from January 18 - June 25, 2027. Muntu is a dancer and choreographer based in Portland, Maine. Originally from Northern Virginia, she danced competitively from a young age and was recently awarded a grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts for a new solo creation set to debut in early 2026. Alongside maintaining an independent teaching practice, she is deeply committed to inspiring future generations of dancers.

✨ Michael Kebede will be in fellowship from July 5 - December 17, 2027. Raised in Ethiopia, Kebede draws from American banjo traditions and East African music to create a resonant link between Black life in the Western hemisphere and the African continent. He has performed folk interpretations and original instrumental compositions in venues ranging from music halls carceral facilities, and churches, to farmers’ markets, porches, and street corners across Maine.

Please join us in congratulating these remarkable artists! 💙 Visit the following link to read the full announcement and learn more: https://tr.ee/A94dZRE6_j

Join us in giving a warm welcome to our May-June Mentorship Artists in Residence: Maya Tihtiyas Attean (local) and Cinthya Briones (visiting).

Our pairing process for the Mentorship Residency centers our local and regional artists. Through their work with and within Indigenous communities, Maya and Cinthya each use their respective practices as a form of storytelling and historical recontextualization. Their pairing invites a shared exploration of land, lineage, and collective memory. Together, we hope their exchange sparks new creative approaches and forms of expression for both artists.

Maya Tihtiyas Attean is a Wabanaki (Penobscot & Passamaquoddy) artist living in Abenaki territory in Maine, raised on the Penobscot Reservation. Her work reflects her ancestry, resilience, and connection to the natural world while exploring the bounds of photography.

Cinthya Briones is an interdisciplinary artist, visual researcher, and educator of Nahua Indigenous heritage based in New York City. Her practice explores migration, memory, spirituality, and resistance from a decolonial feminist perspective, using photography, archival research, text, and community-based textile processes.

We are thrilled to have Maya and Cinthya with us in the studio for the rest of this month. 💙 You can learn more about their respective practices on our website and stay tuned for more information on their upcoming public engagement events.

Indigo Arts Alliance mourns the passing of Gerald Talbot (1931–2026), Maine’s first Black legislator, and a towering figure in civil rights history. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, including his wife Anita and his daughters, State Senator Rachel Talbot Ross and Portland City Councilor Regina Phillips.

Gerald Talbot devoted his life to the pursuit of justice, equality, and dignity for all people. As a politician, civil rights activist, and historian, he worked tirelessly to shape a more just and equitable Maine. Talbot’s unwavering advocacy and belief in a multiracial democracy laid the foundation to safeguard future generations of Black and Brown communities in the state. That vision and determination helped create the conditions for organizations like ours to exist.

While we grieve this tremendous loss, we trust that his legacy will live on, continuing to guide and protect the communities he fought so hard to uplift. We move forward grateful for his example, inspired by his life, and committed to honoring his legacy through our work each day. 💙

We’re kicking off the start of our Mentorship Residency season with two familiar faces: Danielle Arroyo and Pame Chévez! They’ll be joining us now through May 15th as part of our 2026 Alumni Mini-Residency.

This program’s focus on our alumni represents Indigo Arts Alliance’s enduring commitment to reconnecting, re-engaging, and amplifying the voices and practices of our previous Artists-in-Residence. By bringing returning artists back into the fold, we continue to deepen relationships and expand our global arts ecosystem.

Danielle Arroyo was originally a Mentorship Resident with us in 2023. Arroyo is a Maine-based multidisciplinary artist, guided by the seasons and working with natural and found materials. Their work is informed by their experience as a q***r, mixed race, BRCA1 previvor, exploring the relationship between genetic mutations, generational trauma, and breaking curses.

Pame Chévez was originally a Mentorship Resident with us in 2021. Born and raised in Mexico City, Chévez is a Maine-based designer, community organizer, and multidisciplinary artist with a practice spanning Graphic Design, Motion Graphics and 3D modeling. Through OYEH! she leads a Portland-based art and tech studio and as the founder of Palmar Collective, she builds access to water-centered experiences for communities historically excluded from them.

We couldn’t be happier to have Danielle and Pame with us in the studio once more. Join us in giving them a warm welcome back! 💙

As we prepare to announce our 2026–2027 David C. Driskell Fellowship cohort (stay tuned 😉), we’re revisiting our most recent Voices + Visions artist talk featuring Gabriel Frey ‘26, Candice Gosta ‘25, and Benjamin Spalding ‘22 + ‘25. This is an ongoing series focused on the creative intersections and distinct voices of our alumni.

Working across basketry, painting, and sculpture, each of these artists approach their practice from a place of internal reflection and social responsibility. Moderated by our Studio and Program Manager, Ashley Page, their conversation unpacks themes of ancestry, legacy, and identity, in addition to the enduring influence of Dr. David C. Driskell on their work.
