Pacific Youth Choir 🎵 Portland's premier youth choral program
📚 Committed to equitable access to music education⁣⁣
🌱 Nurturing character & belonging through singing

Pacific Youth Choir is designed as a complete graduated choral program. It features ten choirs and serves singers in grades kindergarten through 12th grade. As Pacific Youth Choir students mature in their choral skills they are given developmentally appropriate musical and choral challenges. Through a broad range of choral literature they learn to sing with solid musicianship, tone, and a love for the artistry of great choral singing.

Three out of four kids who sing in a choir say it helps them feel less alone. Here's what the research shows about singing together:⁣
⁣⁣
🎵 After just one hour, stress hormones drop and mood lifts — measurably.⁣

🎵 Over months, singers show less anxiety and more wellbeing than kids who don't sing.⁣

🎵 72% say it makes them feel more optimistic.⁣

None of that surprises us. Every week, 215 young people from kindergarten through 12th grade walk into a PYC rehearsal and find a place where they belong — steadier, more connected, part of something bigger than themselves.⁣

That's the quiet thing choir gives a kid that's hard to put into words. The science just helps us say it out loud.⁣

Know a family whose child could use a place like this? Share this with them!

Pre-registration for Choral Ascend is open — one day, one choir. 🎶⁣

On Saturday, September 19, middle and high school singers from across NW Oregon and SW Washington will spend an immersive day together at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral — rehearsing, growing, and performing as a single choir under this year's clinician, Dr. Nathan Payant of Colorado State University. The professional artists of Choral Arts Ensemble of Portland join them for the final performance.⁣

Educators, this one's for you: reserve up to 8 spots for your school at $15 per singer, with assistance available so cost is never a barrier. Free workshops and re-licensure hours included.⁣

If you know a music teacher who'd want their students in that room, share this with them — we'd love to fill the cathedral with young voices from every corner of the region.⁣

Pre-register your school at the link in the comments. 💙⁣

Something happens in a choir that doesn't happen anywhere else.⁣

When researchers compared group singing to solo singing, only the ensemble raised oxytocin — the hormone of trust, bonding, and belonging. One study. Two conditions. Only together made the difference.⁣

Robin Dunbar's Oxford team calls it the "ice-breaker effect." Singers in a new group grew close faster than any other cohort studied — crafts, creative writing, anything. And it scales. A choir of 232 showed as much bonding as a choir of 12. Most group activities don't do that. Singing does.⁣

For a teenager, this is everything. Adolescents are wired to seek belonging — and a choir gives them a place where belonging isn't a social performance. It's biological. Sing together, become each other's people.⁣

This is the work we do.⁣

"Even when your own kid isn't up there, it's hard not to get emotional. These kids are amazing."⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
That's what an alumni parent shared with us at Infinity: The Boundless Future last night, watching a stage full of 215 kids — none of them hers.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Season 23 closed Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, and what those singers put into that room was the result of a full year of Sundays.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Our youngest ensemble (K-2) sang in two-part harmony. Holding an independent vocal line while another voice sings beside you takes a kind of musical and cognitive maturity most children don't reach for several more years. They did it.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Our 3rd–5th graders built on that foundation. Our middle schoolers took on repertoire that asked everything of them. And our high schoolers — some of whom have been with PYC since elementary school — sounded like professionals.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
We talk often about how choir helps kids grow as singers. What this concert reminded us is that it also helps them grow as people — into the kind of focused, generous, courageous humans who can stand on a stage and do something genuinely difficult in front of strangers, together.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
To every singer: thank you for the work you've poured into this year. To every parent and guardian who got them to rehearsal — thank you for making it possible.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Season 23, you'll be hard to follow. 💫⁣

Behind every rehearsal photo, every concert program, every singer who walked into Trinity ready to give what they had — there's a community of people who said yes to youth music in Portland.⁣

BeLoved Hospice is one of them. As our Season 23 sponsor, BeLoved has helped 215 singers from 114 schools find their voice this year — and we're grateful in a way that's hard to put into a single post.⁣

Hospice care and choral music are, in their own ways, about the same thing: presence, dignity, the importance of being heard. We're honored to share this season with a partner who lives that out every day.⁣

Join us Sunday, May 17 at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral to celebrate the season BeLoved Hospice helped make possible. Ticket link in the comments.

Nine ensembles. Two performances. One week away.⁣

This is what Infinity sounds like seven days out — every voice in the room reaching for something bigger than themselves.⁣

Sunday, May 17 at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Two performances. Both still have plenty of room — bring family, bring a friend, bring someone who needs to hear what young people are capable of right now.⁣
