There is a difference between talking about Fair Chance Hiring and hearing from the people doing the work.

The people connecting employers with talent. Supporting individuals through reentry. Building workforce programs and employment opportunities. And the people who know firsthand what it means to rebuild after incarceration.

On September 16, we're bringing those perspectives together for Rebuilding Lives is How We Rebuild Community: An Invitation to Action.

Together, our panel brings perspectives you won't get from a policy guide or checklist.

Meet the panel:

Nancy Pance | Opportunity Oregon
Connecting employers with justice-impacted talent

Kyle Colleen Black | CREW
Lived experience of incarceration, reentry, and rebuilding

Kelly Haines | UPACT, Portland General Electric Clean Energy Workforce
Building skills and pathways into the workforce

Chase Bissett | Central City Concern
Helping people overcome barriers to meaningful employment

Michael Leslie | Central City Concern
Creating employment opportunities through social enterprise

Fair Chance Hiring isn't simple, and no single perspective can tell the whole story.

Come hear from people who know this work firsthand, ask the difficult questions, and leave with a clearer picture of what Fair Chance Hiring could look like within your organization.

September 16 | 11:30 AM–1:00 PM

You'll have local SHRM-certified HR professionals in your corner, a community working toward the same goal, and a proven program with a 95% pass rate.*

If certification has been on your “someday” list, make this the fall you start.

A background check can tell us something about someone's past. But how much can it tell us about their potential?

For individuals reentering the workforce after incarceration or transitioning out of homelessness, a criminal record or gap in employment can become a barrier before they ever have the opportunity to show an employer what they can do.

Fair Chance Hiring asks us to look closer at the decisions we make and the assumptions that may influence who gets considered.

It doesn't mean ignoring risk or lowering expectations. It means making thoughtful hiring decisions while recognizing talent that might otherwise be overlooked.

On September 16, PHRMA is bringing this conversation into the room with Rebuilding Lives is How We Rebuild Community: An Invitation to Action.

Hear from workforce development professionals, nonprofit leaders, employers, and people with lived experience as we explore the realities of Fair Chance Hiring and what it can look like in practice.

This month, we're recognizing Shari Henry as PHRMA's Volunteer of the Month!

Shari found PHRMA while navigating a career transition and looking for something many HR professionals spend their careers helping create for others: connection.

She found it at her very first HR Think Tank. Before long, Shari was giving back herself, helping plan the Strategic Management Conference and stepping into her role as District 4 Lead.

Today, she helps create the same welcoming experience for other HR professionals, especially those walking into a room where building new connections can feel a little uncomfortable.

As Shari puts it, "When you're with your people and you're connecting from shared values, it doesn't have to be daunting or uncomfortable. It's actually joyful and inspiring."

Thank you, Shari, for the warmth, energy, and commitment you bring to the PHRMA community.

We all see the challenges facing downtown Portland. As HR professionals, we're in a unique position to be part of the solution.

A stable job can be one of the most powerful tools for helping someone rebuild their life and their community.

On September 16, PHRMA is bringing together nonprofit leaders, workforce development professionals, and people with lived experience for Rebuilding Lives is How We Rebuild Community: An Invitation to Action, an HR in 90 panel on Fair Chance Hiring.

We'll go beyond why this work matters and talk about what it actually takes for employers to do it thoughtfully.

How do you navigate background checks, insurance, and compliance? Address bias? Gain stakeholder buy-in? And once someone is hired, how do you build the onboarding and support needed for long-term success?

These aren't always easy questions. That's why we're bringing the people doing this work into the room.
