We are thankful to have partnered with Transcending Hope to throw a big summer kick off BBQ in Lents Park last night. We served over 450 meals to our neighbors, played music, and shared so many hugs and laughs.

Jacob, who coordinated this event, shared a picture of him before recovery, standing in this very park. So this meant more than just food for him and his team, it meant restoration and reciprocity- giving back what was given.

Jacob would love to keep coordinating these meals monthly, but could use help! You can CashApp him at $Jacob88Smith

We are full of gratitude to hear that an amendment passed through city council that trades displacement with belonging, purpose, and opportunity.

The Sanitation, Hygiene, and Workforce Development amendment (Green 3) redirects $1 million from the City’s homelessness sweeps budget into public bathrooms, free laundry services, litter collection and tent side waste collection services, and low-barrier job opportunities that meet people where they are. The amendment includes details that require cuts only be made to funding for camp clearances only and exempts cuts to programs this amendment is designed to fund.

“Constantly displacing and dispossessing traumatized people doesn’t solve homelessness, it prolongs it,” shared Councilor Green. “Instead of layering trauma on top of trauma, we can redirect these dollars to help people wash their clothes, use a bathroom with dignity, and take the first steps into work. We can address basic sanitation, and we can do it in a way that respects our shared humanity.”

Thank you and every councilor who supported opportunity for *all* people.

Yall! Mario got his keys! 👏🏽

The finish line means different things for different people. Some of our friends are facing more barriers and these keys are live giving after months of laboring towards this goal.

When we asked about sharing this success, Mario exclaimed “Hell yeah!”

Cause he did the darn thing!!! 💪🏽👏🏽

Thank you for partnering with us in housing our neighbors out of shelter.

Joey came to our organization through a Workforce Development Program. A peer mentor had shared about this internship and he sent over an email not thinking he’d qualify because of his past.

In the last year and a half, everything changed for Joey.

After a lifetime of addiction and crime, Joey has become the most engaged member of our team, climbing from intern, to peer support and a certified Community Health Worker, to now supervising people who get the very opportunity that changed his life.

When we are thinking of economic strategies for our city and our county, we cannot leave out this population in the conversations around Workforce Development.

A mat on a floor has historically never solved homelessness, but purpose, value, dignity, and financial stability do.

We are supporting Councilor Green’s amendment 3 to move Sanitation, Hygiene, and Workforce Development from the IRP budget over to its own line item and creating an RFP for organizations to apply.

We ask that this amendment consider and include all workforce development programs under Portland Solutions, including this vital internship at risk of losing any future funding.

We have three folks who are graduating our Workforce Development Program this week!

All three of these friends have overcome so many barriers and challenges in their time with us, so making it to graduating was a fight they didn’t give up on.

Looking back through our data over the last 18 months, we realize we have a 76% graduation rate! Which is incredible when you are thinking about people who have faced chronic homelessness.

That shows us that people desire purpose, belonging, to contribute to good things happening in our city- they just need opportunity.

Our program allows for a super messy first few weeks, as people practice again, just showing up, pushing through hard days, doing the next forward motion. Without this phase, people do not have the opportunity they deserve.

76% of participants in this program were also housed in long term stable housing by completion of the program, 22% were in 24 hour shelter, and only 2% went back out.

Additionally, 67% were employed within weeks of leaving the program with continued support. The barrier for some others were criminal history and were referred to the Clear Clinic.

This program is at risk of not being considered in the current budget for the City of Portland and we are concerned to see programs with these kinds of successes fall by the wayside.

You have an opportunity send written testimony to our city council, later this week, in support of these kinds of program in your budget. There is also opportunity for public testimony on May 18th.

Thank you for sponsoring a 40 yard dumpster for Lents Dumpster Day! We filled the entire thing in 2 hours, removing bulky waste and debris from yards and garages, keeping all of it from landing in waterways and the sides of the streets.

We also sent a crew down to Johnson Creek, who filled a truck load of garbage and bulky trash coming from the sides of the creek and path nearby.

The watershed clean ups and stewardship have been in partnership with to keep Johnson Creek a healthy and safe place for all of us!

We try to have a dumpster day a couple times a year! Subscribe to our newsletter or follow us on social media to stay up to date.

Anthony is on his way! In April, he graduated our program, secured long term stable housing, and landing a position doing peer support with a local shelter.

One of the things that Anthony found brought his most success was the village he began to build around himself. Realizing that community and mentors, and the ability to process together and outside of ourselves was the path towards wholeness.

In Anthony’s exit interview he shared “I see things differently now. I am learning that everything is not so black and white.”

Sometimes recognizing the complexity about ourselves and the world around us is the way to set ourselves free.

We are so proud of Anthony and excited to see his future, as we stay connected!

Thank you for continuing to invest in people toward stability. Employment and life skills are part of the continuum that reduces recurring homelessness.
