We are peers with acquired brain injury, family and friends, and community members who strive to support and empower one another, helping to create the best possible lives for ourselves, and for our loved ones. We are from all walks of life. Many of us have sustained various types of acquired brain injury, includi

ng traumatic brain injury, stroke, brain tumors, and anoxia, or know someone who has. What We Do

Our mission is to connect those touched by brain injury to the people, resources, and services that best serve their needs. We are an umbrella organization that supports programs and services that serve the brain injury community in the Portland metropolitan area in the Pacific Northwest. We are here to share what we’ve learned, advance awareness of brain injury and better connect people with what they need, when they need it. We value collaboration and look forward to expanding our community partnerships with like-minded organizations. Why We Are Here

Our vision is to improve the quality of life of those affected by brain injury. Brain injuries are complex and often misunderstood. Navigating life after a brain injury can be challenging for the individual and those who support someone who has sustained the injury. Our mission is to make that journey easier by providing an inclusive environment that fosters support, education, and collaboration between survivors, care partners, and the community. How We Do It

We have monthly Peer Support Group Meetings as well as workshops and social events. We have Peer Support Meetings and separate Family & Friends Support Meetings. Join our mailing list to receive updates, announcements, and meeting reminders at [email protected]. Find out more about Portland-area peer support meetings, activities and events, by following the link to the Community Calendar. We have also included wonderful local and regional resources on our Resources page. Be sure to take a look to see if any of these resources can be of help to you.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

Brain injury affects more than just our physical bodies. Brain injury can change how we feel, act and interact with our environment around us.

Navigating the Brain injury itself can be overwhelming, but the feelings of loss and isolation for both the survivor and their friends, family and caregivers often can be more than we should ever carry alone.

While social support groups do not replace professional help, they can help you to get plugged into a community that understands what you're going through.

Pair social groups like we have here at Brain Injury Connections - Northwest with the mental health support of a professional or those at and you have a solid step towards tools and community.

Brain Injury Awareness Month is almost over, but our work isn't anywhere close to done...

Earlier this month, we shared how brain injury can change a life in an instant — and how the need for connection continues long after medical care ends.

As we near the close of Brain Injury Awareness Month, we wanted to reach out once more to thank you for being part of this community — and to share just how meaningful your support continues to be.

Since January 1st alone, we have welcomed over 1,000 program visits and several new folks into our community. If this momentum continues, we are on track to surpass 4,000 visits this year — each one a meaningful moment of connection and healing.

These moments matter. They are conversations that ease isolation, laughter that brings lightness back into difficult days, and spaces where people feel understood — often for the first time since their injury.

Recovery from a brain injury doesn’t stop, and neither do we. Every day, someone new is looking for support, unsure where to turn. We remain committed to being there — with free, accessible programs that ensure no one has to navigate this journey alone.

If you’ve already given, thank you. Your support is already making a difference. If you’ve been considering it, there’s still time to be part of this work.

We’re grateful to have you alongside us.

Brain injuries are unique to each person who has survived one. No matter how "big" or "small" the injury may have been, the symptoms can vary widely person to person.

You may hear someone say, "If you've seen one brain injury, you've seen one brain injury". This encapsulates the individualized nature of a brain injury.

Two folks who have suffered the same degree of a concussion can have wildly different short and long term impact. Person 1 may experience light sensitivity for a short time and a few occasional headaches. Person 2 may experience persistent dizziness and personality changes.

Our educational ask to our community is to *never assume* someone is either capable--or incapable--of doing something as a result of their brain injury.

Brain injuries can happen at any moment and, in an instant, change lives in ways that can last a lifetime. They do not discriminate and can affect anyone – from a young volleyball player in mid-game, to a long-haul driver in the middle of their work day, to a teacher in their classroom, to a dad on a weekend bike ride with his kids.

Long after acute medical care ends and therapies wind down, the need for belonging and purpose remains. The road from surviving to thriving can be full of difficulty and often loneliness. The vision of Brain Injury Connections – Northwest (BIC-NW) is to improve the quality of life of those impacted by brain injury. Our determination is to keep our programs free and accessible, ensuring that no one has to navigate this journey alone. Your financial support has made this vital work possible.

In 2025, we brought connection, community, and hope to nearly 400 brain injury survivors and the people who love and care for them. Together, they participated more than 3000 times, across our 13 rich and varied programs. Every time people gathered — in person or virtually — our peer-led programs offered conversations that eased isolation, ignited laughter that mended hearts, sparked creativity that bonded friends, grew confidence to explore new things, and provided a safe space for healing to unfold.

Recovery from a brain injury does not stop, and neither does BIC-NW. We are committed to serving people who are searching for connection. Your continued support now will make that possible.
