More Than After School

What if after school could be a place where kids feel connected, supported, and excited to be themselves?

At the JCA, our Afterschool Program gives kids a welcoming place to spend their afternoons—with time for homework, creative activities, games, friends, and plenty of fun.

It’s more than a place to go after the school day. It’s a community where kids can learn, play, and belong.

Ready to make afternoons something your child looks forward to? Sign up for JCA Afterschool today!

Today's Hebrew Word: Todah

Todah means "thank you," but in Jewish tradition, gratitude is more than just good manners—it's a way of seeing the world. It's about recognizing the people who lift us up, strengthen our community, and make everyday moments meaningful.

At the Jewish Community Alliance, we have so many reasons to say todah.

Todah to our members who make the JCA a place of belonging.
Todah to our volunteers who generously give their time and talents.
Todah to our donors whose support makes our mission possible.
Todah to our incredible staff who show up every day with passion, compassion, and dedication.
And todah to our entire community for choosing to learn, celebrate, connect, and grow together.

Because of you, Jewish life in Southern Maine continues to thrive.

Todah. Thank you. We couldn't do it without you.

Our community shows up for one another—and here's another chance to make a difference.

For only the second time in history, the American Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis — and patients may already be feeling the impact. Donors are asked to act immediately to help save lives.

Blood donations have fallen to a four-year summer low, worsening this season’s emergency blood shortage. All blood types are needed, but the situation is especially dire for type O blood as the Red Cross is now limiting distributions of these blood products to hospitals. The supply of type O positive blood has now dropped below a one-day supply.

Don't wait! Sign up to save a life.

Meet Susan Cohen, our new CEO!

We asked Susan a few fun questions to get to know the person behind the new title—and we learned that she’s been a New Englander at heart from the very beginning. In fact, Augusta, Montpelier, and Boston were among the first capital cities she learned before she could even read!

A few more Susan fun facts:
1. Three words she’d use to describe herself: Hardworking. Principled. Inclusive.
2. Favorite Jewish holiday: Rosh Hashanah—a time to reflect on the past, imagine a better future, and celebrate the kindness and community that make the holiday so special.
3. Go-to comfort food: Smoked salmon, which for Susan is all about celebration, tradition, and memory.
4. Skill she’d love to instantly master: Mah Jongg or pickleball… though she admits neither would be quite so instant!

If you'd like to help us welcome Susan, use this link to send her a welcome message: https://mainejewish.app.neoncrm.com/forms/welcome-susan

We’re so excited to welcome Susan to the JCA community. Be sure to say hello and introduce yourself when you see her around!

pssst... here's a bonus fact: Susan's dog's name is Billy, he's a very good boy, and he's also a new Mainer!

Every building has a story—and some helped build an entire community.

The former Jewish Community Center on Cumberland Avenue wasn't just a place to gather. It was where friendships were made, children grew up, servicemen found a welcoming home during World War II, and the vision for Center Day Camp first came to life.

This remarkable story is just one of the many hidden gems you'll discover in the Jewish Community Alliance's 5789 Abacus Calendar: Historic Jewish Places in Maine.

More than a calendar, it's a journey through the people, places, and moments that shaped Jewish life in Maine. https://www.mainejewish.org/jcc
