The JCA was honored to participate in this year’s Kwibuka ceremony, the annual commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Members of the Jewish Community Relations Council attended both the memorial walk and the main ceremony at Westbrook High School in support of the Tutsi community. Tutsi leaders spoke about the historic connection between the Jewish and Tutsi communities, and JCRC Director Zach Schwartz pledged continued unity and friendship between them.

Following the ceremony, guests gathered at the JCA for music and food. We are deeply grateful to our Tutsi friends for including us in this sacred occasion and look forward to continuing to strengthen our relationship with the Tutsi community in Maine.

It was an honor to join  in Boston to celebrate the extraordinary impact of Barry Shrage on Jewish communal life and the generations of leaders, philanthropists, and engaged Jewish young adults shaped by his vision.

The impact of Birthright continues to be nothing short of transformational. Recent research found that 84% of Birthright alumni who go on to have children raise them exclusively Jewish, regardless of whether their partner is Jewish. Alumni are also significantly more likely to celebrate Jewish traditions, pursue Jewish education for their children, and remain deeply connected to Jewish community and Israel.

The JCA is incredibly proud to support Birthright through our Annual Campaign Allocations process. This year, your collective philanthropy enabled us to allocate $15,000 to Birthright Israel — enough to help send roughly three young adults on a life-changing journey to Israel.
