Working with seven local partners, we are producing multimedia Native American curriculum for mental health, addictions, domestic violence protection and Type Two Diabetes learning modules for Portland area service providers and their clients. We have also hosted 15 multicultural celebrations since 1999, including An Afternoon with Wisdom of the Elders, Native American Day, and celebrations launching our radio and television series.

Come hang out with us for a community craft night! It’s potluck style, so bring a dish to share if you can. We’ll be making necklaces for the Delta Park Powwow giveaway, trying out salve making, and getting creative with some painting. It’s a great chance to connect and create together. Everyone is welcome!

Congratulations to our interns, that we celebrated last Friday for their achievement in (ITEK) Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge.

“We are what we imagine. Our very existence consists in our imagination of ourselves. Our best destiny is to imagine, at least, completely, who and what, and that we are. The greatest tragedy that can befall us is to go unimagined.”- N. Scott Momaday

This is 30 years of work.

Elders on record. Interns in the field. Native plants back in the ground. Language coming home.

Wisdom of the Elders has spent three decades protecting Indigenous ecological knowledge, training the next generation of environmental stewards, and recording the voices of Elders and Knowledge Keepers before those stories are lost. This video is a glimpse of that work.

Right now, the funding that makes all of this possible is under threat. We are asking for your support this June so we can keep our interns paid and in the field, our cameras rolling, and our archive growing.

Donate through the link in bio. Subscribe to our newsletter for the full story on what your support makes possible.

The land, the Elders, and the next generation of stewards are counting on it.

Wisdom met with our partner, Blueprint Foundation, at Leach Botanical Gardens on April 11th to enjoy homemade stinging nettle tea and tour the Back 5 project. We met, walked in the creek, collected river rocks, and enjoyed community.

Joseph Flying Bye, known as Kangi Hotanka (Crow with a Loud Voice), was a Hunkpapa Lakota elder, pejuta wicasa (medicine man), and wakan wicasa (holy man) from the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation. Raised by his grandparents from birth, he was steeped in oral tradition long before he ever sat in a classroom. The teachings came at night, through stories that could last days, passed down through family and memory.

In this recording, Joseph speaks through his translator about the way his people lived. He shares stories of the tipi circle, the sacred pipe, and the warpath teachings given to young men coming of age. He draws a direct line between those old ways and what he sees happening in the world today. His mind, he says, is still clear. He still has stories to tell.

This recording is part of the Indigenous Archive Initiative, a core effort of Wisdom of the Elders to preserve and protect more than thirty years of Indigenous storytelling, knowledge, and cultural documentation. We work to digitize thousands of audio and video recordings shared by Elders, culture keepers, artists, and community members, including cleaning up audio from older archives so these voices can be heard clearly. This work belongs to the families and tribes who shared it.

Dr. Woodrow Morrison Jr. is a Haida elder, storyteller, and wisdom keeper from Hydaburg, Alaska. He has carried the knowledge of his people through some of the hardest experiences this country imposed on Native communities, including the Indian boarding school system, which he survived firsthand. His voice, his memory, and his willingness to share are a gift. In this conversation, Dr. Morrison speaks to that history and what it has meant for generations of Native people.
Please follow the link tree and support our fundraising goals. It supports all of the programs and efforts.
The mission of Wisdom of the Elders is to honor Indigenous Elders and sustain cultural knowledge through storytelling, education, and intergenerational connection. As an Indigenous-led nonprofit, we uplift Elder voices and teachings to support Indigenous communities and ensure these living traditions continue for future generations.
