Great new Feature Story from Paul Danzer on our website.

Rick Wise was a three-sport standout at Madison (1963), an all-PIL quarterback and defensive back, second-team basketball star and three-time All-PIL selection in baseball. Tom Wise played four years of varsity baseball at Madison - after hitting a grand slam in his first high school at bat. A first-team All-PIL selection three times and twice All-state, Tom led the PIL in pitching and hitting as a senior (1970).

Overview of G6 Football

G6 football refers to the Group of Six conferences in NCAA Division I FBS college football. These conferences are not classified as part of the more prestigious Power Four leagues. The G6 includes:
American Athletic Conference (AAC)
Conference USA (CUSA)
Mid-American Conference (MAC)
Mountain West Conference (MW)
Pac-12 Conference
Sun Belt Conference (SBC)
Characteristics of G6 Conferences
Prestige and Competition
G6 conferences are generally viewed as less prestigious compared to the Power Four (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC).
They often have lower financial resources, which affects their ability to attract top talent and coaches.

Performance and Opportunities

Despite being seen as less competitive, G6 teams have been known to cause upsets against higher-ranked teams.
G6 teams have access to bowl games and, starting in the 2024 season, at least one G6 conference champion will be guaranteed entry into the College Football Playoff under the new 12-team format.

Current Landscape

As of the 2026 season, the G6 includes a mix of traditional programs and newer entrants, with the Pac-12 now functioning as a G6 conference after losing its autonomy status. This shift has created new dynamics in college football, as teams from these conferences strive for recognition and success on a national level.
