Our Mandarin Immersion Seniors are on their way to Taiwan for their long awaited Research Residency!
This was the last class to miss their 8th grade Research Residency due to COVID, so these students have waited 13 years for this opportunity! They have spent this year preparing for the trip, meeting host families virtually and are finally on their way.
They will spend time at a high school, visit a college in Taipei and sit in on a class, and complete daily assignments that will have them running for up to 12 hours each day.
This is not a field trip, but an extraordinary academic experience which, together woty the work during the trip and the compilation and presentation of their research after the trip, will make up a significant part of their second semester grade.

Shu Ren is incredibly proud of these students and the dedication and commitment they have shown through their 13 years of mandarin immersion study, and grateful to Teacher Nancy Yang for ensuring these students did not miss out on this life changing extraordinary experience!

Special thanks also to parent chaperones, families who have supported their students though the years and families who have helped with 13 years of fundraising, and to the Portland School board and superintendent for recognizing and supporting this unique educational opportunity.

Thanks Shu Ren Community for all of the fantastic volunteers, performances and great food! We had a fantastic turnout last night for our annual Lunar New Year celebration at Woodstock Elementary School! We had representation from all three schools- Seniors from Cleveland hosted a bake sale to raise some last minute funds for their Taiwan Research Residency, 8th Graders from Harrison Park hosted an Italian Soda booth to raise funds for their upcoming Taiwan Research Residency, and the craft tables, bounce houses and cafeteria were filled with excited Woodstock kids! We had volunteers from all three schools as well to help staff everything from the kitchen to the craft tables, this Mamdarin immersion community showed up last night in all the best ways!

The school board will be voting on the new field trip policy tonight. Please show up and wear your red in support of this new policy. There are two spots available for public testimony, comments are critical to ensure the opportunity to continue with our research residency programs.
