REMINDER!

We recently shared the news of how Roosevelt has been impacted by the PPS budget cuts, and asked our alumni to find ways to support current students this year by showing up. Now that school has begun, we'll be making that a little easier by sharing an Event of the Week every Sunday.

This week, come out and cheer for Volleyball as they take on McKay High School in a pre-season game. Enter through the gymnasium doors close to the football field, right off the parking lot on Burr. Tickets are $7 and can be bought at the door. Make sure you admire the lobby while you are there - we've packed it full of athletic history.

Send this to classmates and friends, and make plans to attend. Alumni, show up for Roosevelt!

The new school year has started and our Student Representatives have submitted their first report! We are excited to have Rylan back with us again and are looking forward to introducing you all to our new Junior Rep, Sammy, soon.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Eddie deFreitas.

Eddie graduated with the Class of 1969, and has been a member of the RHSAA board for a very long time. He championed so many of our athletic history efforts and always wanted to ensure that the accomplished athletes from Roosevelt High School would not be forgotten, and would in fact be honored. He also sat on the executive committee of the PIL Hall of Fame, and his efforts were appreciated city-wide.

He was a wealth of knowledge, and even as his health declined he continued to play an active role in the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee. One project he cared deeply about was establishing a proper RHS Hall of Fame, and in the past few months, the committee has been making extra effort on the foundational work for this, with Eddie's supervision.

Eddie was a kind friend, and it is hard to express how much we will miss him.

We will share details about a service or other celebration of Eddie's life once we know more.

Cross Country runs again soon! Take a look at this throwback from the 1961 yearbook showing the 1960 fall season runners.

XC will release a schedule soon, and we'll share when they are hosting their home meet at Pier Park. We hope to have alumni turnout to support, rain or shine.

Last week we held our August Executive Committee meeting to discuss business and covered a lot of ground. These sessions take place between our board meetings to handle our day-to-day operations and support our various committees. Here are some highlights from our call:

- Approved our first student club grant of the school year! We'll be sharing more about the recipient next week.
- Debriefed on the success of this year's All-Class Picnic, started laying the groundwork for next year, and talked about recruiting a new Picnic Chair.
- Reviewed plans for our Student Representatives as they get started for the year. Their first reports are due September 1st.
- Looked ahead to Homecoming on October 16th. We'll start planning soon once student leadership begins coordinating plans on their end.
- Shared updates from recent conversations and knowledge sharing with other alumni associations in Portland.
- Reported on recent class reunions we've helped support.
- Set plans in motion for working toward our annual Association goals. We'll have more to share about those soon!
- Talked about the need for additional History volunteers to help refresh some of our display cases around campus.

There is plenty happening as we head into the new school year, and we'll continue sharing updates as these projects and plans move forward!

Volleyball season is upon us! Take a look back at the 2005 fall season, from the 2006 yearbook.

We're excited to see Keri Hughes back with the team, she previously coached from 1999 to 2008 and has been a long time RHS teacher.
