It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of a profound loss for our Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp family. Our beloved Program Administrative Coordinator, Kathy Werschkul, passed away peacefully of natural causes last Thursday at the age of 85, following recent health challenges.

For over 20 years as a staff member, and several years prior as a volunteer and dedicated member of the Tualatin Kiwanis Club, Kathy was a quiet force that helped keep camp running.

Kathy held a complex role at MHKC, managing summer camp registration for our campers. She masterfully navigated the intricate paperwork required to understand campers’ complex medical and behavioral needs, ensuring every camper was safe and cared for. Her deep expertise in Medicaid reimbursement rules across Oregon and Washington allowed hundreds of families to access our programs seamlessly.

To our staff, Kathy was "Google before Google." She carried decades of camp knowledge in her head. If anyone needed a policy from a decade ago, a specific camper date, or the exact location of a missing office item, Kathy had the answer.  She was famous for her legendary emails, always short, direct, with no fluff, and purely effective. While she sometimes presented a tough shell, anyone who knew her well knew her heart of gold. She was our silent supporter, constantly donating to our auctions, contributing camp supplies through our Amazon wish lists, tracking and ordering office supplies, and listening intently to, and relishing, camper stories. Outside of her family, camp was truly her world.

For our camper families, she was a constant, reliable presence who touched thousands of lives.  Kathy was the glue and the backbone of MHKC. To honor her, office staff will permanently keep a supply of Heath bars and dog treats on hand, exactly as she would have wanted!

Please join us in thanking Kathy, posthumously, for years of invaluable service to MHKC.  We extend to her surviving family our love and all best wishes as they deal with this heavy loss.

🚨 We still REALLY need camp counselors for the second half of summer — especially Session 3 and Weeks 5 & 6 (July 19–August 1)! 💜💚 We've cut a lot of the numbers down, which is fantastic!

Every summer, our volunteers help create life-changing experiences for campers with developmental disabilities — but right now, we are still short on counselors for some of our biggest weeks.

If you’ve ever thought:
✨ “I want to do something meaningful.”
✨ “I miss camp.”
✨ “I want a summer that actually matters.”
✨ “I want hands-on experience working with people.”

This is your sign. 💛

You do NOT need prior experience — just patience, kindness, flexibility, and a willingness to jump in and be part of the magic. We’ll support you every step of the way.

At MHKC, you’ll:
🏕 Make unforgettable memories
🤝 Build real leadership & communication skills
💜 Make a direct impact on someone’s life
🔥 Laugh harder than you expect
👫 Leave with lifelong friendships

Our most urgent needs are:
📅 Session 3
📅 Week 5 (July 19–25)
📅 Week 6 (July 27–August 1)

If you can give even ONE week of your summer, it would make a huge difference for our campers and staff.

Please share this post, tag someone who would thrive at camp, or message us with questions. We truly cannot do this without our volunteers. 💚
