As we look back and remember what happened 25 years ago on September 11th, the City of Portland held it’s Annual 9/11 Ceremony. This ceremony is always special, but this year a memorial was unveiled.

Thank you to Kirby Building Systems and Blackburn Construction Company for all their work to make this memorial a reality. If you weren’t able to attend tonight, make time to stop by. It’s a beautiful testament to what changed our nation 25 years ago, and we will never forget.

When people ask me, "What exactly does a Chamber of Commerce do?"... it's a little tricky to answer. Honestly, it depends on what day you ask me. Some days, we are planning a festival or community event. Some days, we're meeting with business owners. Some days, we're talking with educators and employers about workforce needs. Some days, we're promoting a local business. And some days, we're sitting with elected officials discussing the future of Portland.

So yes - we put on events. And we love our events. But the Portland Chamber of Commerce is about so much more than events. At the heart of everything we do is one goal - the help make Portland a better place to live and work.

So what does the Chamber do?
1. We connect
2. We promote
3. We develop
4. We advocate

CONNECT:
The Chamber is really in the business of bringing people together. We connect businesses with potential customers. We connect new business owners with resources. We connect employers with educators. We connect people with opportunities. And we connect community leaders with one another. Sometimes, the most important thing we do is simply get the right people in the same room.

Sometimes a simple conversation leads to a new customer, a partnership, a solution to a problem or a relationship that otherwise may have never happened. Those relationships matter.

PROMOTE:
We promote our Chamber members - but we also promote Portland. We use social media & other marketing opportunities to highlight local businesses, celebrate new businesses through ribbon cuttings, share accomplishments, promote events, and help tell the stories of the businesses that make Portland unique.

One of the things we're really excited about is "Made in Portland" which kicks off in October. October is Manufacturing Month, and we will be highlighting companies and products that are made right here in Portland. We want to shine a light on the companies and the people behind those products and celebrate the impact manufacturing has on Portland.

DEVELOP:
We also invest in developing people, leaders and the future of our community. One area we are continuing to focus on is workforce and education. We don't have all the answers, but we can bring the right people to the table. We can bring employers, educators, community leaders and workforce partners together and ask questions like "What does our workforce need today? What will our workforce look like five to ten years from now? How can we help get our students prepared for the workforce and retain our amazing students & talent here in Portland and Sumner County?"

ADVOCATE:
What people hear the word "advocacy," they sometimes immediately think politics. But advocacy is much broader than that. Part of our responsibility is to create opportunities for businesses & community members to stay informed and engaged.
