Rita Sorensen

In 1973, Officer Rita Sorensen became the first woman hired to serve as a patrol officer for the Portland Police Bureau.

Despite skepticism and resistance, Sorensen proved that women could succeed in the demanding role of patrol policing. helping open the door for generations of women who followed in Portland law enforcement.

Her perseverance and professionalism helped reshape expectations and expand opportunities within the Bureau.

Happy Ending!

On July 26, officers responded to a call about a loose dog in a Southeast Portland parking lot. When they arrived, officers found a young female German Shepherd eating jerky from a security guard’s hand. Before Animal Control could arrive, the dog darted off — and the chase was on! Officers spent over an hour carefully tracking her through the area. Thanks to coordination with Animal Control and some helpful community members who pointed out where the dog had gone, she was safely and gently captured. The dog is now safe and receiving the care she needs.
Thanks to everyone who helped bring this adventure to a happy ending!

Your Clackamas Fire crews are on scene of a residential fire in Eagle Creek. Because there was no fire hydrant available, firefighters had to rely on their water tender group to supply water via tanker trucks. From the time of arrival, the fire was extinguished in roughly 12 minutes, which included an initial search as well as the protection of any exposures from Fire. There were no injuries reported. Fire investigators are on scene to determine the cause.
