American golf established roots early in Maine. Near the turn of the 20th century, the sport exploded here as wealthy summer visitors and local enthusiasts built courses near popular resorts, coastal towns, and inland retreats. Be it Bar Harbor's Kebo Valley Golf Club or the Poland Springs Reso...

What's new on Maine Memory Network?

Check out 3 interesting glass plate negatives from a 1927 Portland Evening Express feature on John A. Whitney, the "Dynamite King." Whitney, who operated out of Falmouth, shocked reporters by kicking over a 50-pound case of dynamite and cutting open a stick to show how stable it was when handled correctly. They distributed handbills—like the one shown here—with his photograph and description, asking the public for help. Similar announcements appeared in newspapers, and the case received widespread coverage for several years, including false discovery claims in 1923.
