Since 2005, Berman & Simmons has been a shining example of commitment to Maine's civil legal aid providers, and this year is no exception.

Recently, we visited their Lewiston office to accept a $25,000 donation from thanks to the generosity of their attorneys and shareholders. 💕

The Campaign for Justice is the collaborative initiative of Maine's legal community to uphold the promise of access to justice for all. This collaboration continues in many law firms across the state with individual lawyers uniting in their support for civil legal aid services. We're excited to recognize one such firm today.

Congratulations to Jaye Martin, Esq., the recipient of the Campaign for Justice's 2026 Peter J. DeTroy III Award!

The DeTroy Award recognizes individuals who have worked to advance justice in Maine and/or to remove barriers for vulnerable populations.

Jaye was selected for her extraordinary dedication to upholding the rights and dignity of our state's elder residents. One of the nominations submitted on Jaye's behalf reads:

“Jaye Martin gave more than two decades of her professional life to ensuring that older Mainers had access to justice. The breadth and depth of her contributions — to clients, to her organization, the legal aid community, and to the State of Maine — reflect exactly the selfless spirit that Peter DeTroy exemplified.”

The Award was presented by 2026 Campaign for Justice Co-Chair Jim Costello and Pine Tree Legal Assistance Director of Litigation, Deirdre M. Smith. Cabinet members Travis Brennan , Bill Harwood, Laura M. O'Hanlon and provider directors John Brautigam (@ Legal Services for Maine Elders, Nell Brimmer (Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project, and Robyn Merrill (Maine Equal Justice) were also in attendance.

May 1 is Law Day!

Today we commemorate the rule of law that protects our liberties, contributes to our freedom, and helps to promote justice for all. Law Day 2026 is especially meaningful because this year marks our country's 250th anniversary, making the celebration of our country's ideals even more significant.

In honor of this milestone, we are thrilled to share that the generous lawyers who serve on the boards of the civil legal aid providers that benefit from the Campaign for Justice: Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP), Legal Services for Maine Elders, Maine Equal Justice, Pine Tree Legal Assistance, and Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project.

Throughout the month of May, the first 250 donations of $250 or more will be matched dollar for dollar up to $62,500!

Today we had the honor of presenting the first of three Champions of Justice awards to our friends at Murray Plumb & Murray!

This award recognizes lawyers at firms whose extraordinary dedication to ensuring access to justice for all Mainers is reflected in their participation rates and giving amounts.
