Oya No Kai Homestays

Oya No Kai Homestays Interns are a vital part of the Japanese Language Immersion Program! Tabor Middle School, and Grant High School.

Japanese interns are an integral part of the Japanese Immersion Program at Richmond Elementary School, Mt. In addition to assisting the Japanese teachers in the classroom, interns ensure that JIP students hear two Japanese language speakers on a daily basis. At Richmond, these volunteers help out with all classroom duties and also provide one-on-one tutoring through the Homework Club sponsored by

Oya No Kai, Inc. The interns are also a valued asset to the middle and high schools when the Japanese language program filters into other school curricula.

Dear JMP Families,

Welcome back to the 2018-2018 school year!

The Japanese Intern Program supported by Oya No Kai provides an enriched learning environment for our children (K through 12th) in our Japanese immersion program and gives our community the opportunity to further their understanding of Japanese language and culture.

We are requesting an immediate commitment for interns who need host families for the next 6 months (Oct. 7th/8th 2017 until the end of March 2018).

The two primary requirements of a host family are:
1. that you live within 45 min bus ride of one of the three schools (Richmond, Mt. Tabor, or Grant) and
2. that you have a separate bedroom for the intern. Bathrooms may be shared.

If you are able to host, please contact the Oya No Kai Intern coordinator ,Yoko Niki-Breyfogle at [email protected], by September 11th. More information can be found at https://oyanokai.org/homestay-host-guidelines/

* We are also looking for families who can host our new intern between mid January 2018 to the end of June 2018

Hello Japanese Immersion Families,

Thank you for your long term support of the intern program!

We are still(!) looking for a host family for a NEW male intern who is arriving in Portland the end of August through the end of June 2015 (during this period of time, it's possible to split 10 months between two families, for 5 months each)

As you know, Japanese interns are an integral part of the Japanese Immersion Program. It is great news that we will have an additional intern in a classroom starting in September. However, he would be able to come here only if there will be a host family for him.

The new intern who is looking for a host family from the end of August is Kai Kimura (male intern) and he is requesting a family with no pets (dogs and cats) because of his previous heath condition (asthma).

You can find information about him on the Oya No Kai website: http://oyanokai.org/miscellaneous/

The two primary requirements of a host family are:
1. that you live within a 1-hour bus ride of one of the three schools (Richmond, Mt. Tabor, or Grant) and
2. that you have a separate bedroom for the intern. Bathrooms may be shared.

Please reply to this e-mail ASAP to contact Yoko Niki-Breyfogle ([email protected] or 503-351-1543) if you are willing and able to host him from the end of August and to get more info about the intern home stay program.

Thank you for your support!

We are in desperate need of 6 more host families for our new group of interns arriving in late March! The two requirements needed to host are: Live within a 1-hour bus ride of one of our schools (Richmond, Mt. Tabor, Grant) and have a separate bedroom for the intern. (Shared bathroom is okay.)

Without the generosity of our community to host an intern for 6 - 12 months, our Intern Program will not be sustainable. No host families = no interns.

Please contact Intern Coordinator, Yoko Niki-Breyfogle, for more information. [email protected]

Please take a moment to sign this important petition. Although it has been said that the JMP will continue at Grant, the efficacy will be mitigated by cuts in staffing. It will also discontinue Japanese classes for neighborhood schools.

Grant High School is a public high school in Portland, OR. Like many other public schools, it has been facing terrible budget cuts year after year. This year, they had proposed to cut the entire Japanese Program. Although part of it (the JMP) has been saved, we still face other cuts, such as Japanes...
