Voodoo Doughnut has begun their union busting tactics by firing workers and intentionally intimidating employees.

Voodoo Doughnut has begun its union busting tactics by holding intimidating closed door conversations with staff, with some of the staff reporting alleged accusations of the union and union members themselves. The company has also repeatedly removed informative posters about the union and our upcoming union election, which were posted by employees on a communal cork board.

Many unilateral changes to our working conditions have been made throughout the duration of the election process, such as our changes to our external shop communications platforms, shift coverage policies, and now, workers are no longer allowed in the building unless clocking onto their shifts, a rule which had never existed prior to the union election. The union suspects these changes are being made to limit communications between workers within the restaurant.

Lastly, the company has now fired a worker for having previously called out. The pro union worker was not informed that this would in any way affect their employment with the company, but was nonetheless dismissed without cause on their next day of work. This is blatant union busting. The employee was a known union supporter, and had worn their union button to work on many occasions. Firing an employee for union activity days before a union election, despite properly calling out, is disgusting.

Please stand in solidarity with Doughnut Workers United and let Voodoo Doughnut know what you think about their blatant union busting. You can reach them on their various social media platforms, their website: https://www.voodoodoughnut.com/contact/ , or by phone: (503) 241-4704

Doughnut Workers United wishes for nothing more than a more democratic and safe workplace, where employees are properly compensated and cared for, for making Voodoo Doughnut the establishment it is today! A brighter future is possible, and now employees will have a chance to vote in our upcoming election! Stand with us, we need our community now more than ever~

A message from OHA Director Pat Allen:

When this pandemic began, one of the first messages we communicated to the public was an effort to address stigma and bias against the Asian community in Oregon. Clear back then, there were incidents of discrimination, and reports that businesses were losing customers over an unfounded belief they were in some way connected to the spread of the coronavirus.

This week’s shootings in Atlanta, while not yet definitively classified as a bias crime, remind us that bias, as well as broader anti-Asian/Pacific Islander bias and stereotyping, haven’t gone away. I want to acknowledge the pain and anger many of our Asian and Pacific Islander community members are feeling right now. A pandemic is hard enough, and brings enough challenges without events like this being added to the mix.

Here are some resources that you or someone you know may find helpful, not just now, but any time:

-Project Lotus. Destigmatizes mental health issues in Asian-American communities by tackling the model minority stereotype through culturally-relevant education for the community and the empowerment of voices. Project Lotus advances the movement for Asian-Americans to be able to discuss, care for and advocate for mental health freely, without shame or stigma. (theprojectlotus.org)

- Lines for Life: Racial Equity Support Line. Whether in small acts or violent ones, racial bias can have serious emotional impacts. Racism changes how we see the world around us. It’s stressful to worry about how people see us as different or dangerous. It’s exhausting to notice the ways that people treat us as less-than, day in and day out. It’s heartbreaking to turn on the news and learn about more violence against people who look like us. The Equity Line, 503-575-3764, is answered by BIPOC counselors, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

- Asian Health and Service Center. AHSC provides a safe and culturally sensitive place for Asians who seek mental health care. It’s a culturally competent and linguistically appropriate service that is offered in Cantonese, English, Korean, Mandarin and Vietnamese. All staff members of the mental health program are multilingual and multicultural professionals who have extensive experience in the field. AHSC accepts Oregon Health Plan. (ahscpdx.org)

Workers and community members picketed at the Convention Center Burgerville today to demand the company enable credit card tips for drive-thru orders. Click to sign the petition if you think customers should be allowed to tip frontline workers: https://www.coworker.org/petitions/we-demand-tips-in-the-drive-thru

Food service workers are among the workers at greatest risk for the spread of COVID-19. Burgerville has routinely denied workers hazard pay during the pandemic - the least they can do is allow customers to help make up the difference!

On February 20, 2021, 12pm, the Doughnut Workers United (DWU) delivered an ultimatum to Voodoo Doughnuts: corporate has five days to voluntarily recognize the union as workers are able to demonstrate overwhelming union support, or workers at the Old Town location will file for an election with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

Formal recognition, either through voluntary recognition or a successful election, would force Voodoo Doughnuts to enter into negotiations with its workers.
The election would only be for workers at the Old Town location. The union hopes to have it as soon as possible, though rulings under the Trump NLRB have significantly slowed the process. A yes vote would mean that the DWU joins a growing movement of food service workers, here in Portland and nationally, who are fighting for the rights of frontline workers during COVID.

“The vote is so that workers ourselves have a legally binding seat at the table to negotiate over our essential work in a dysfunctional downtown that constantly forgets that its workers who make this neighborhood run,” says ‘Lupe’ Miller, a worker at the Old Town store and a staunch union supporter. “Everyone wants to write Downtown’s obituary. I want workers who love and care for each other to write its next chapter instead.”

Samantha Bryce, an employee, union leader, trans rights activist and proud mother voiced to the company with coworkers "We don't want a drawn out contentious fight, this isn't remotely personal, we love many of the management staff... Don't squander resources on union busting employee relations firms and law firms. From the bottom of our hearts work with us." "There's no shame in being union strong, union proud, and our doughnuts Union Made"
