What an incredibly delightful outing at Schoodic Point, led by Dr. Susan Brawley and supported by the Schoodic Institute! We lucked out with sunshine and were able to enjoy a day investigating the intertidal zone and learning all about marine macroalgae (seaweeds!) Our group even got to utilize the microscopes for a closer look at the structure of different rockweeds.

Our outings program here in Maine is small but mighty, so keep your eyes peeled for more fun opportunities to get involved!

Earlier this month, our volunteers banded together to plant oak trees in Deering Park!  In the words of volunteer Lauren Strohmeier, “The event was a success! There was a great turnout and we planted lots of oak trees. It was wonderful getting to know fellow members of the Chapter while making a meaningful impact for the environment.”

Last week, the Sierra Club was able to participate in an event with several other organizations including NRCM, NPCA, and CEBE to discuss and learn more about how to protect our forests from unchecked development.

Our undeveloped national forests are the heart of our public land. But now one of the most important — and most underappreciated — conservation policies is on the verge of being cut by Trump. If the Roadless Area Conservation Rule is repealed, 45 million acres of pristine national forests across the country would be opened up for the first time in over 20 years to road building and the logging, mining, and extractive industries that come with that.

Speak up today by submitting comment through the Sierra Club petition at the link in our profile!

Dr. Hannah Webber, Director of Marine Ecology at the Schoodic Institute, will introduce us to the ecological research that is underway. Susan will lead a hike in the nearby intertidal zone. After meeting the “citizens” of the intertidal zone, we’ll have lunch with a view! After lunch, we can use microscopes to examine some of the marine algae’s features (e.g., reproductive structures, epiphytes such as diatoms and hydroids) and/or do more hiking (e.g., a wooded trail, the Sundew Trail runs from the Institute’s campus to the shore of Frenchman’s Bay).

This is a follow up Outing event to Susan Brawley’s November 11, 2025 Community Conversation on rockweed biology, (e.g., sexual reproduction, regeneration mechanisms), ecology/ecological roles, and value as a sustainably harvested crop. We will look at rockweeds, and a variety of green and red macroalgae and associated invertebrate animals in the intertidal zone, including tide pools, at Schoodic.

Join a Sierra Club National Outing on our beautiful Allagash River Wilderness Waterway with Registered Maine Guide and Sierra Club Maine Chapter member Tomas Dundzila! This epic paddling journey follows much of a 100-mile-long chain of lakes and rivers, and one of the few eastern rivers that can be paddled a week or longer without coming into contact with modern civilization.

The Allagash has it all — from tranquil lakes (less tranquil when the wind kicks up in the afternoon), to easy flowing flat water river sections, to some quick water and class II whitewater paddling (with options to portage these sections). The Allagash is more than a wildlife park. It is wild - a prime moose feeding area with otter, mink, muskrat, beaver, loons, ducks, geese, bald eagles and other birds of prey as well.

This outing is geared toward paddlers who enjoy backcountry camping. Campsites have fireplaces, picnic tables and privies. We will take turns with cooking and clean-up. You will set up your tent, and have additional camp duties, but also have time to relax, explore the surroundings, read, take photographs, or identify plants. Each day we will talk about conservation in Maine and your local area. Learn more or sign up at outings.sierraclub.org!

Is your electric bill too high? We agree. When our survival depends on energy, it’s imperative that every person has equitable access to electricity, and that includes reasonable rates.

CMP (Central Maine Power) is planning yet another rate hike this July, and ANOTHER next May. If this passes through the Public Utilities Commission, Mainers will pay on average an extra $216 per year. Over the past two years, CMP customers paid $220 million extra for unusual storm restoration costs, plus interest!

Last year, our coalition, Fight the Hike, beat back another proposed CMP rate hike. For the first time ever, a CMP rate hike proposal was denied. We won last year, and together we can win now too.

Please submit your comment today! Use the link in our bio or visit tinyurl.com/Affordablemaineenergy to tell the PUC “NO” on rate hikes

By nearly every measure, 2025 was a challenging year for environmental organizations, including Sierra Club Maine. As our federal leaders embrace climate denialism, support for environment initiatives waned, and many of us grieved for a future that felt like it was increasingly slipping out of our grasp.

We were not immune to those pressures. But we were insulated by something more durable than policy: the people who make up this organization. Despite national headwinds, Sierra Club Maine has remained resilient. Our funding has remained stable—and grassroots donations have even increased! New volunteers have continued to join the organization at all levels. And we kickstarted our political program to fully engage in the 2026 Maine state elections.

What this annual report documents is not a story of surviving 2025, but it is a story of growing through it. We can’t wait to show you where we’re headed next!

Our public lands are under assault, that’s no secret. This brand new tool from pulls the curtain back, revealing exactly which legislators are responsible for gutting our national parks and monuments.

Even now, a new resolution is being considered, introduced by Mike Lee and Celeste Maloy to strip protections from Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. If passed, S.J. Res 30/ H.J.Res.151 would permanently bar any management plan that is “substantially the same” from being made for these national public lands, leaving its 1.87 million acres of natural history and archaeological records vulnerable to destruction. You can act now at sc.org/protectgse

Here in Maine, we aren’t sitting too high. The tireless work of advocates like and to protect our woods and waters is countered by antagonistic voting records in both the senate and house from and

Our lands have no lobbyists; it is up to us to protect and advocate for our beautiful America. If you care about our forests, coastlines, great plains, red rock deserts, towering mountains, or biodiverse wetlands, call your representatives today at (202) 224-3121 and tell them to take a stand for public lands and vote NO on Resolution 30.

⚡️We’re so excited to hear from John Farrell, co-director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance and directs the Energy Democracy Initiative next Tuesday! Widely known as the guru of distributed energy, he has received accolades for his vivid illustrations of the economic and environmental benefits of local ownership of decentralized renewable energy.

John authored Energy Self-Reliant States, a state-by-state atlas of renewable energy potential highlighted in the New York Times, showing that most states don’t need to look outside their borders to meet their electricity needs. He’s also written extensively on the economic advantages of Democratizing the Electricity System and community renewable energy, published a rich interactive map on solar grid parity, and polished the policies (like Minnesota’s solar energy standard) necessary to support locally owned renewable energy development.

Join us at 4 pm May 19th to learn more about clean energy systems!

Make a meaningful impact on your community and environment by joining the Sierra Club Maine Chapter for a special native tree planting event at Deering Oaks Park! 🌳Nestled just west of downtown Portland, this beloved green space is the perfect setting to come together and help cultivate a healthier, more sustainable future.

Starting at 2:00 pm, participants will have the unique opportunity to learn directly from local experts, including Mark Reiland, City Arborist for Portland, and Leyla Hashi of the Portland Parks Conservancy. After the planting session, stay and continue making a difference with a park clean-up effort. You can choose to participate in one or both activities—every moment you give contributes to the beauty and vitality of this shared space.
